Last night I went out into my shed to turn the lights off and noticed one of my boys didn’t look himself (he’d been fine all day) as I’d been in the shed for a few hours cleaning there hutches and the shed , I got him out of his hutch to check him and he seemed completely not himself his stomah looked bloated like a ballon and it was making a gurgle noise, his eyes looked sunken too and when I looked at his mouth I noticed a green mucus coming from it, on the way to the vets he took his last breath, I feel terrible as he’s been fine all day he’d had all the same food and bedding no change, I feel guilty, could I have done anything different to have prevent this also could it be contagious to my others living in the shed , my boy didn’t live in the same hutch as the others as he didn’t like the others 😭😭I’m so heartbroken right now he was only around 3 and was bought from pets at home as a baby 😭😭

I’m so sorry for your loss.
It sounds like it came on very quickly.
I was shocked when I went in the shed and seen him like that it had only been between 2-3 hours since I was last in there due to cooking and cleaning I wish I knew what had happened and why it hit him all of a sudden I’m so upset he was such a lovely boy

If it was bloat or a gut issue then it can come on very quickly and they can deteriorate very fast. Be kind to yourself. Hugs
Thankyou I’ve been having a read this morning and it does sound like bloat do you know if it’s contagious I’m really paranoid regarding my others x

Again, I'm really sorry for your loss.. And please, don't blame yourself. If he looked like everything was fine until that moment it'd have been difficult to realise something was going on...
Sending big big hugs your way.

Popcorn free sweet little boy x

Bloat it could be also many other issues.
The rapid way he died tells me nothing could have prevented it.
Keep a good eye in the others I don't think it is contagious but I'm no expert.
Pls look after yourself etc.
Rip little piggie.

Sorry to hear of your loss. It's easy to torture yourself with 'what ifs' but it sounds like it happened so quickly there wasn't really anything you could do. x

I’ve cried and cried today blaming myself as I couldn’t get to the vets quick enough x

Even if you'd arrived at the vets it might have been too late for treatment to work anyway as he'd gone downhill so rapidly. It's only natural to blame yourself - I still feel guilty about my gerbil Matilda who died at the vets many years ago and what I could have done differently - but we can only do so much. x

Aw I’m so sorry for your loss :( If it was bloat or another gut issue, it won’t be contagious to your other piggies but if you are feeding gassy veg such as broccoli and cabbage, you may want to cut back on it (((hugs)))
Thankyou they normally have broccoli once a week and I very rarely feed cabbage I normally stick to
Bell pepper, lettuce, kale, spinach, tomatoes , carrots ( small amount) and some fruit and herbs I normally rotate it so they don't get too much kale and spinach does this sound ok x

I am so sorry for your loss.
It’s horrible when it happens so unexpectedly.
I do understand how you feel having lost one of mine in similar circumstances.
Be gentle with yourself as you grieve.
We are here to support you.

So sorry for your loss but at least you could be with him in his final moments. I don't know if it helps or not but I remember finding my Bumble in what I was certain was a bout of bloat (after reading guides on here because I had never experienced it before) but it turned out that it wasn't bloat but was her internal organs already shutting down after whatever else had happened since I last saw them that day. It's hard and heartbreaking but you did everything you could, unfortunately we can't monitor them 24/7 as we need sleep, food, work etc ourselves. Please don't be hard on yourself

Yes, just be careful with the kale and spinach as they’re both high in calcium. Only give those, broccoli carrot and fruit in moderation. I do however doubt your diet would have caused whatever was wrong so please don’t worry about that x
