My Guinea, Gus has had reacuring skin problems. He is long haired, and gets dandruffy dry skin. First time I took him to the vets, and the said it's probably mites, gave me the treatment, washed all his blankets, bedding, deep cleansed his cage. It came back, took him too the vet again, and then they said it's was an allergic reaction, worked out that it's went away after I stopped giving him celery. After 3 months of no celery and healthy skin it is back! I have no idea how too help him now, the weather has got really hot here, that might be why? Can anyone give me any advice?

Hi and welcome!

Could you please add your country, state/province or UK county to your details, so we can adjust any advice and recommendation to what is relevant and available where you are. We have got members from all over the world. Please click on your username on the top bar, then go to personal details and scroll down to location. thank you!

Could you also add a picture of the skin problem.

Is it just dandruff or is there any hair loss connected to it? Have you considered giving your piggy a shorter summer haircut and especially removing the underlayers on the sides and keeping things shorter at the bum/genitalia to get rid of the ski suit your piggy is lugging around and to therefore improve the aeration of the skin. It could be just bad aeration or has your vet considered a fungal problem? Heat and humidity are an ideal breeding ground for fungal problems.

I added a pic of his skin and dandruff. I regularly cut the hair around his bum, I added a pic of the length I trim it too, do I need to go shorter? My other Guinea has no problem at all, how can I help it if it is fungal? Thank you

Hmmmmmm, no sign of scabs?

I would give him a haircut and see whether that improves things. See your vet to make sure that there is no mild fungal issue involved. it can be frustratingly difficult to work out what is going on when it is not some classic ringworm or mange mites.

He's gorgeous. I keep my piggys hair around that length too and he hasn't had any skin problems. Though I always have the AC on or a window open to let the breeze in and keep him cool

Do Guinea pigs sweat?

Thank you:) My short haired Gordon does not have any skin problems

Do Guinea pigs sweat?

Guinea pigs regulate the temperature of their bodies via the blood flow in their ears. They do not sweat.

If they are damp, it is from condensation in a badly aired hidey; please remove any during a hot weather and replace them with something that provides better air flow, like a log tunnel or by turning a cardboard box into a little stool with four open sides.
