I made the decision yesterday to have a postmortem carried out on little Milo's body.

The vet has just called to say that although nothing looked obviously wrong, he has taken tissue samples, the bowel and samples of faeces. We are initially going to get the faeces analysed as all the deaths and illness have been diarrhea related.

I just so hope we can find out whats causing this. At least then I will feel little Milo didn't die for nothing. Maybe he could be the one who died to save the others!

I have asked that his body be cremated and his ashes returned to me so that I can scatter him in the garden where all his other friends are buried.

I just need some answers as to why this keeps happening.

Let us know if you hear anything?
I think a few of us have had/having the same probs :'(

I think that this a very positive thing you have done and a wonderful testament to your little one.
I do hope you can get to the bottom of this, you are doing everything you can and so much more than most people would do.

Take care,
Barbara

Thank you Barbara!

My animals mean the world to me. These passed few weeks have been so difficult. Everybody on here has been so very kind and I want to thank everyone for their kind words.

1000% agreed and perfectly put

Barbara summed up my feelings. Well done you for making the difficult decision to go ahead with the PM, but lets just hope that you get some positive feedback from it. You can do no more than you are doing, big hugs and it goes without saying that we are all thinking of you.

I think you need to find closure on all this worry to give you peace of mind or you will be full of if onlys, and darling Milos going to be giving you that, hopefully, if I had any doubt about my pigs deaths I would do the same thing and in most circumstances other would do so as well, you need an answer, fingers crossed you will get that this weekend, keep us updated please, hope you are feeling better, :-*

Lots of hugs coming your way.(((((((((((Hugs)))))))))))

Bless you I know how hard of a decision this is... I had to make it myself when my tiny baby Elmo died in the hope it might save his siblings. I hope it brings you the closure and comfort it did to me. Hard as it was.

Debbie sending you heaps of piggie kisses and cuddles from us both :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
I admire your decision it would've been difficult

Have just had a call from vets re tests done on faeces from Milo. Apparently the only thing it shows is a parasite called Trichomonas which causes diarrhea in cats. The vet is going to call the lab on Monday (he isn't in work tomorrow) to see what they know about it as they didn't put any comments on the report. He says he has never heard of it in guinea pigs! Has anyone else heard of this?

INCOMING! Lots of hugs to make you feel better :) lol

I have never heard of this... I hope there is a cure or somthing to stop this from spreading...

Apparently this is not usually life threatening in cats although it can give them diarrhea for up to three years in the most severe cases. My vet says he has never known a cat with it for anything like that long though!

Will have to wait and see what he can find out when he speaks with the lab on Monday. He says that although he had never heard of it in guinea pigs, this could be because its not known about as very few people would have a postmortem done on a guinea pig.

Will keep you all updated.

The rest are all looking well and happy at the moment! :)

Aww that's good!

A vet told us about it being in cats a while back when Tatty was ill - but never mentioned up to three years! He had worming stuff and he got better.

A new thing for piggies then?

It does make you wonder. I really think that its one of those things that if caught early then they can be ok. Ginger was showing signs of it on the Friday evening before Milo died but I gave him some probiotic and made sure he was kept hydrated until the diarrhea stopped. Unfortunately Milo started with it while I was at work and by the time I got home he was incredibly weak and floppy. But then it could be that Ginger had something completely different. At no time did he actually look ill, he just had diarrhea. The trouble is they go downhill so very quickly. :'(

aww yeah! Too quick and in most cases there's nothing you can do :'(

I guess it's like us humans, always finding out new illnesses and so forth :-\ :-\

Just done a google search to see if i could find anything out that might be useful - only came up with it affecting humans or birds though. Well, that and the ones that came up that said they were using GP's for research into the human form of the virus :tickedoff: :'( almost wish I hadn't looked now :'(

Thats so horrible!

I have just been to collect the cremated remains of Milo. :'(

I have never had any of my animals cremated before. The others have been buried in the garden. I am going to take some time to decide what to do with his ashes. I am thinking of maybe burying them in a pot of beautiful flowers.

I have mine cremated too and I had my dog cremated, because I live in rented accomodation I couldn't bear the thought of leaving them behind........And then I can take them with me when I go, although by then I pity the poor guys carrying my box with loads of little boxes round the edge!

Yes I would hate to move and feel I have left them behind even though I know they will always be in my heart! :smitten:

Whatever you do don't tell the removal guys what they are carrying...people can get so funny about ashes! My mum kept my dad's ashes so they could eventually be scattered together. When she went into a residential home some of the staff refused to go into her room because the ashes freaked them out! How pathetic is that? They wouldn't have known what they were if I hadn't told anyone, but didn't want anyone to just find them and be shocked. After my mum died we scattered them together and it felt so right...they were reunited! :smitten:

Aw bless! :smitten: Yes people can be funny about ashes can't they? I think its a good idea so you can ( as you have) place them somewhere where that person would always want to be. My Dad's beside a railway line where he used to watch the trains as a child when he bunked off school he was a railway 'anorak' and guess he always will be now!
