...and I just can't hide it!

:laluot_18:

I contacted a rescue and they got back to me today! I am a first time guinea pig owner and live with a boyfriend who has asthma. I contacted the rescue to see if we can both come and visit and she has said we can come over on Sunday! :D

I am really looking forward to going and meeting the people at the rescue and the guinea pigs they have up for adoption. I have never held a guinea pig before or heard the noises they make in person. I have already got the metre ruler out (can't find the tape measure!) and been marking out where the cage will be. The C&C grids are already in my online shopping basket ready for me to press pay. This could all be slightly premature if it turns out my boyfriend cannot be around piggies because they trigger his asthma.

Fingers crossed he is OK with them and I can start getting bits and pieces for my future adopted piggies!

Don't know if it helps...but while not asthmatic, I'm allergic to horses and cats, however, how have two guineas based in the lounge with me, and it's not triggering my allergies (even seem to be ok with the hay, despite hayfever!) - tink their fur must be quite different. So if his asthma tends to be triggered by horses/cats he may be ok. Good luck! :-)

Also, fur type can be something to consider! I adore rex's and have one at the moment but I have to wear long sleeves when handling him as I get a terrible rash. But my smooth and longhaired piggies don't give me any trouble.
My mum is asthmatic and just can't be around them, she used to look after them when I go on holiday, which is only once a year anyway but she can't now, makes her too ill so they stay at my house and she comes in twice a day.

I'm asthmatic and the piggies don't set me off at all tho! So everyones's different. Also, on the fur thing, just for an example, my mum is allergic to short hair but not long hair, so just a few things to think about, your boyfriend may not be good with some types of piggie but you don't need to rule them all out :)
Good luck!

My sister is asthmatic. She has three piggies living in her bedroom. My OH has allergies and my piggies have to live in a summerhouse in the garden because he can't have them in the house. I hope that you are able to get some piggies they are great :)

Fingers crossed all goes well for you. My astmatic friend has no problems with the piggies but the hay sets off her hay fever so they get a good brush before she comes so she can hold them!

Good luck. Oh and well done for approaching a rescue instead of a pet shop!

Hi,

My husband and one of my sons both have asthma and they are fine with the piggies which are all indoors, and we have 13! I just make sure my pigs are housed on fleece with hay racks so that there isn't wood shavings everywhere.

It's always very exciting to adopt new piggies and I hope you find your perfect new additions! :(|)

Best of luck! I hope that you can work out a way around the asthma!

Great that you are going rescue!

Thanks all :(|)

Dust is his main trigger and also cat hair, he is OK around dogs though?

I've found dust free hay and going to use up the Finacard (chopped cardboard) I've already got then will be using fleece liners or sticking with Finacard depending on how messy they are.

It does seem everyone is different with asthma so hopefully we find a type he is OK with.

I am lucky that I do not have asthma myself, I really hope scientists are working on a cure for it!

I will let you know how we get on tomorrow! If all goes well our adopted piggies will definitely be spoilt :)

This is interesting as when my rex snuggles up to my neck I end up with a red mark afterwards! I think maybe it's because their fur is coarser though.

I would say that Abyssinian piggies are the worst for shedding "hair" so avoid that type if hair is a trigger for him :)

I can totally relate to your excitement. I'm exactly the same, about to get my first pair of guinea pigs. I've got their indoor cage on order and I'm busy scanning ebay and the internet for bedding, toys, hides etc. I went along to my local RSPCA rescue yesterday and there's a couple of pairs that I fell in love with. I can choose either and I've been approved for adopting them!
I do hope your visit goes as well and fingers crossed with the asthma issue. ;)

good luck

I have asthma, hayfever and all sorts of allergies, I also have a rex, an abby and two smooth coats. While touching the rex my skin reddens and a rash will appear so I cover up as much as possible and wash my skin afterwards. I dont react to the other 3 but I react worse to the hay. I keep them on fleece to minimise dust, I have hay in hay racks so they dont smell or have hay on them when I handle them and I brush up as much hair and stray hay as possible each day to keep them tidy.

Went to the rescue today and good news!

Kevin was OK with all the hay and piggies (there were a lot of piggies!) except for when he held a fluffy guinea pig. Sorry, I am not familiar with all of the types yet! She looked like a fluff ball with quite course hair. His asthma started to come on when he was holding that one, but the owners took her off him and gave him another which was half tufty half long haired and he was OK with that one :(|)

All of the piggies were so lovely, they asked me which ones I liked best and I loved them all! There were 2 boys that stuck in my mind so I am hoping I will be able to adopt those 2 although I will be just as happy to adopt any of them! They were both short haired and apparently like pooping on the roof of their house.

I can now start buying lots of guinea pig related things :(|)

Ooooooooo Very exciting! Roof poo'ers eh?! LOL! Glad he was ok asthma wise with the piggie.

Have a look at the housing board above for cage inspiration. If you are having them indoors it is really worth making your own C&C. You get get a much bigger cage than a shop bought one for the same price.

Very exciting :-) Would love an update once you bring your guineas home. Enjoy!

Great News!

I think I was more excited than my children when I went to collect my guinea pigs. Be prepared for them to take over your life in the most wonderful way :))

The website guinea pig cages has good instructions on how to build a C&C cage and the forum has loads on the gallery.

I was so scepital about using C&C, especially with fleece but once I read up on it and took the plunge it was so easy and would never use anything else.

Good luck and I can't wait to see pigtures of your new arrivals :)
