I've had my boars nearly two years now, and I'm still not convinced I'm getting this right! They are very big boys and I'm still not sure whether they are getting too much food.

Every morning they get a bowl of tesco guinea pig food or wagg guinea pig crunch (depends whether I shopped in Asda or Tesco that week!). It doesn't get topped up, when it is gone that's it. Then at teatime they get a bowl of vegetables, usually two or three types. Favourites are carrot, cucumber, spinach, cherry tomatoes and apple.

Hay is topped up regularly, when they are running short.

Is this right?

Mine get 1 handful each of dried 2 large handfuls of hay a day and 2 portions of veggies a day of various types, usually around 10 different veggies (1 green, 3 veg, 1 fruit)

Mine seem to be doing well on that, not fat not thin I don't want them overweight I am aware that 2 of my Sows of probably going to be porkers though so I'm quite obsessed with a varied diet. :)

I give mine unlimited pellets, 2 get through a bowl in 24 hours! loads and loads of hay, 2 different types and veg twice a day, lots of variety. Some of my pigs are big, some smaller but none are fat! Excercise outside the cage is important, all mine get out every day :)

Yours sound like they are eating well mine get p@h guinea pig muesli every day.
Hay and veggies my hay is topped up when empty.
I think your doing everything your supposed to -c

What you're doing sounds fine. I read somewhere some guide lines on feeding, i think it might have been guinea lynx, and they recommend:

Cup of mixed veggies per guinea
Unlimited hay
A small handful of pellets per guinea
Unlimited grass

They don't need a lot of pellets as it doesn't make up much of their diet. I think it's too much veggies and especially pellets that makes them fat.

Too many veggies can be as bad as not enough! The calcium to phosperous ratio can be wrong if too much of a particular type of veg is given just as too much calcium in the diet can cause renal stones and sludge, so smaller amounts but a good variety is the key I think, If a pig is given just cabbage and carrots, the balance will be all wrong!

I agree with that Fi. It is important to offer a varied diet as in the long run you will save yourself a packet in vet fees. :)

Yeah sounds good to me. With Toby in the morning I give him his gerty Guinea pig, fresh hay and a carrot and some lettuce. Then in the evening I give him some apple and spinach (these can vary in my case!) and ofc fresh hay all the time.
