Well this is just a little post that is made to help some of you first time or just curious owners. So firstly piggies CAN'T EAT
- avacado ( too fatty )
- sweet potato ( mine died via allergic reaction just give it to them at your own risk )
- Middle of a cucumber ( hard to digest)
- beans ( bloating )
- bishop's weed ( may have toxic nitrate levels)
- coconut ( fatty )
- English Ivy
- garlic ( poisonous )
- horse radish ( very pungent )
- iceberg lettuce ( low nutritional value )
- iris
- meat
- mistletoe
Mushrooms ( poisonous )

As far as I'm aware small amounts of sweet potato skins are okay, mine get some very occasionally. Not sure what kind of beans you mean but some again are okay. Cucumber is fine.

Onions however need to be on the list as they're toxic to pretty much all animals.

Thank you yes I will add onions this post is a work in progress :) I was wondering about sweet potato because about 4 years ago my pig died cos of if so I just put it on for allergen purposes

If they eat a whole potato or something like that then yes they could be very unwell from it. My lot get a few occasional skins and love them. Literally anything can cause an allergic reaction for any animal including ourselves, but sweet potato is a far better alternative to wheats and grains in pellet foods/treats for example.

With all new foods you try with piggies do it slowly and with small amounts. Did your vet confirm that it was from the sweet potato?

although they are not poisonous for them I would avoid cereals, flour and wheat, also if contained in pellets.
@sport_billy 's piggies eat sweet potatoes...:roll:

from Guinea Lynx website:

Not Recommended In Diet

  • Avoid mixes or treats with nuts, seeds, dried fruit and dyed pieces.
  • Do not feed dairy and meat products (guinea pigs are herbivores)
  • Avoid seeds in husks (like sunflower seeds), which can be a choking hazard.
  • Do not feed rabbit pellets (they do not contain Vitamin C and some may even include antibiotics toxic to guinea pigs).
  • Avoid or use sparingly, cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, collards, bok choy, broccoli), as they may cause gas in your pet.
  • Do not use mineral wheels. Never use Tang (which contains dyes, refined sugars, and very little vitamin C) in drinking water.
  • Avoid commercial treats marketed for guinea pigs (like yoghurt drops) which can even be detrimental to their health. Consuming these empty calories (many contain fat, sugars and even excess calcium) can result in decreased consumption of the basic foods they really need.
No multivitamins!

Plain vitamin C is fine, but multivitamins are not. Excessive amounts of fat soluble vitamins like A and D can cause serious problems for your pet.

Yes she did and it was my mum's fault because she gave her a whole sweet potato :(
