Hi, I haven't posted in a while, but I really need everyone's help right now.
My little boy Mario Asterix has developed a bald spot near his hip. The skin is not inflamed or red, just pinkish. There is a small dark spot near the end of it, but I am thinking that is just a natural mark that has been there forever since the fur that was there would be darker. I separated him from his brother Luigi Obilix, hoping that it wasn't a real medical problem and that it was just them fighting. I have no idea when or how it happened, and when I got home from school it was there. It wasn't there this morining.
I really need help on this! We don not have 2 cages, so Mario Asterix is in a cardboard box on my bed with water, hay, fruit (apple, his fave), and pellet food. I am so worried about him that I can't describe it! If a picture would be helpful, I took one but I would need help on how to post it.

You did the right thing to seperate him. Not sure what time it is in America right now - but can you take him to a vet? Or first thing Saturday morning?

Does it look like a bite wound or just a bold spot?

A bold spot could indicate mites or a fungal infection. You need a vet to confirm and treatment options given to you.

As long as you take your piggie to the vet ASAP it shouldn't be too serious - however, delaying veterniary assistance could make a simple skin infection become very serious.

Well done for seperating. Just make sure he's comfortable and happy, and incase of a fungal infection, wash your hands thoroughly after you handle him.

Don't panic. A vet should be able to give you some treatment fairly easily, an anti-mite treatment such as Xeno, or something like Imaverol or Maleseb shampoo for a fungal infection - (although I'm not sure what the equivalent names for these medications are in America). Of course, we aren't vets here so you really need a proper diagnosis before treating.

In order to be prepared for your vet visit, have a read through the guinea lynx website on skin conditions. That way you can discuss with the vet the most suitable treatment.

Thanks so much! I am taking him to the vet as soon as they open on Saturday. It is just a bald spot. The picture is on my cell phone, and I am trying to upload it. So far it isn't working.

I'm actually not sure that you should have separated them. If it is just a plain bald spot with no obvious signs on the skin such as flakey dandruff or raised scabs it could have been pulled out by him or his buddy (barbering). If it is mites or fungal (you will need a vet trip for this) then even if only one is showing signs chances are both will have it and will both need treatment anyway. There is little advantage to separating for a skin complaint or other illness - it could stress the piggies more being away from their friend than whatever is wrong with them.

I'd suggest putting them both back together before they've been apart too long and makes rebonding difficult. We only normally recommend separating boars (and sows) when they have been fighting and blood is drawn.

Fingers crossed it is nothing serious!
