Help! Just got home to find Charlie very down and hiding in the corner, checked him over and he had 3 poos stuck! I've cleaned him out but now he is just sitting in his cage.

I'm going to give him some remedy feed as he is not eating, I have some fibreplex and bio lapis, should I give this too him too? he has lost about 30grams in weight too.

He is about 3.5 years old and neutered.

I would take him to the vet pronto. Losing weight is a good sign something is really wrong here. I once had a boar who had compaction problems and whenever I 'd pick him up he dropped a rain of turds on the floor. also, I think lettuce would help too as it will get things moving again , I feed my pigs lettuce 2x a day.
 
I do not know what this fibreplex is or the bio lapis, so I cannot help you there. sorry.
 
Lettuce should only be given in small amounts as a treat.It has no nutritional value and contains laudenam which can cause neural damage if given too much of.
This gp should be taken to a vet asap as there is obviously something very wrong with it.
Never waste time trying home remedies with gp`s because they can deteriorate very quickly.
 
Sorry I didn't mean home remedies, I have recovery sachets from the vets to help him start eating

I thought lettuce had high amounts of Vitamin C which guinea pigs absolutely require in their diet? and also what kind of neural damage? I feed them lettuce that much because they are used to it, seems to do them good, and they complain (squeak) if I don;t give them lettuce frequently. I guess I will cut back on the lettuce, then. maybe once a day? or is that still too much?
 
Sorry to hear that Charlie is not feeling too good. Has he just stopped eating?
He may not be impacted but just sitting around because he is feeling under the weather.

In my experience, an impacted boar even if he moves around will not dislodge the poos impacted in his bottom because they aren't normal formed pellets but a mass of poo. Sorry :red, but I am sure you know what I mean.

If Charlie is losing weight, listless and not eating, then I would recommend a trip to the vet.

I only feed my piggies lettuce as an occasional treat and then it is usually Romaine or Cos lettuce. To my knowledge, lettuce has very little, or no nutritional value, although piggies do love it.
 
I've managed to feed him some recovery and he has perked up a bit.

The poos were individual but literally stuck, so i had to use warm water to soften them out.

Ill ring the vets first thing and keep feeding him the recovery stuff.

Lettuces such as kos etc are not considered bad, its only iceberg - please do not confuse this. once i fnid the link, i shall post it.

aw Louise, i am so sorry i have just seen this thread, How is little charlie at the moment? i think going to the vets is the best thing, they will be able to advise what to do. Just keep him confortable and make sure he gets lots of fluids and food.

I'm sorry that Charlie is unwell. I would probably pop him to the vets for once over just to be on the safe side. I hope he's feeling better soon. Please us know how he gets on.
If it helps I only used to feed my piggies lettuce on the rare occasion as I was told it can cause runny poops if too much is given.

You can manipulate the poops out as well, just do it gently daily if he is impacted.

Ok I'm back from the vets and he has URI, he has had three jabs!
Baytril, Norcarp and Metoclopramide. He has another appointment tomorrow for another anti bot jab.

I have been hand feeding him supreme recovery and bio lapis but he is not impressed with this and hardly has eaten anything but the vet said he should feel much better after the jabs have taken affect. I'm going home at lunch time to give him another feed. I'm hoping he would have munched on some food himself.

He had a fight with Angel at the weekend and the vet said it was probably the stress of the fight that cause the URI. Charlie and Angel are now seperated but Faith (Charlies cage mate) is a bit off colour too, so I'm going to take her aswell tomorrow for a check up.

aww I'm so pleased they found out what was wrong. I'm sure he will start feeling better, the poor little man!

Poor Charlie is not doing too well, he hasn't eaten on his own at all. I'm thinking its his back teeth are a problem too.
We went back to the vets this afternoon and his mouth was full of food! 8... where i had been syringe feeding him and he hasn't been eating it, i felt awful! 8... The vet couldn't really see into his mouth because of the food also she isnt an expert on pigs dental problems. The vet gave him another anti bot jab as his breathing is very bad and a pain killer so hopefully he will still eating, but he seems to have gone down hill rapidly. I've got to take him back tomorrow morning to see the expert and see if it his teeth. I'm still syringe feeding him recovery but with lots of liquid so its easier for him to eat.
 
It was suggested to me when I was syringe feeding my sow for some weeks that once you have syringed the food to rinse the mouth with water a couple of times so you could get as much food into him as possible rather than it getting stuck in his mouth. You could also try chopping his favourite foods into small pieces and lifting the side of his mouth and popping one in his mouth. There should be a gap between the pre-molars and the molars where the syringe can fit (hope that makes sense :{) and again rinse mouth with water. I hope that Charlie starts to pick up soon xx
