One of my boys is impacted. I think! This is the one thing I have always dreaded having to deal with. I have searched other threads and am quite confident with how to deal with it but one problem I have is holding him whilst clearing him out. What is the best way to hold him as he struggles and I have no one else that can hold him for me.
 
I would think with your thumb and forefinger under his armpits, palm on his chest, and with his back pressed firmly against your chest? You can then put your other thumb on his tummy to push and your fingers of that hand behind his back to steady him.

That's how I would attempt it anyway - I've never actually done it.
 
You could pop a towel onto your lap and lie him gently on his back but propped up. Put your arm across his chest gently so then you will have both hands free. He will make a fuss but should eventually get used to this regular occurrence!
 
Thankyou for your replies. I have just given him the first proper clearout and it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be. I'm not saying it was enjoyable and I would prefer not to have to do it for his sake and mine but I won't worry about doing it now. I laid him on his back and he was quite good. It was probably quite nice having it cleaned out!
 
I'm currently doing this with my boar Badger. Poor thing isn't that happy about it but stays calm bless him, just wimpers a little.

I sort of cradle him over some kitchen towel and gently clean him. He gets a treat afterwards and seems to have totally forgotten the ordeal when he gets the treat. Funny that!
 
I have been doing this regularly for a week now but have another question to ask. When I clean the poo out it is very soft so it doesn't seem to all come out. As much as I clean there is still some left in there. Is this normal or am I not doing it right?
 
Hi love yes i found this too, i used to manipulate as much out but then only use a cotton bud carefully and i mean real carefully just into the opening of the anus and try to scoop out the muck as it does seem to sit there :{
As long as you manipulate daily if it's real bad or ever few days if not so bad you'll get most out
I used a cotton bud that i'd dipped in warm water and i also used to use makeup remover pads dipped in warm water and then clean out or wipe away left over muck.....
Yes i found the best way was to have Dukey on his back and then gently manipulate down and remove his pellets or the sludge... you can do this over a toilet or onto a papertowel to be disposed of xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
If he is happy with this i'd stick to it, cause as you know if they're happy we're happy and i always gave a nice treat and cuddles afterwards xxxxxxxxxxxx

Don't envy you this task - I have only had one of our boars that need help, but at the moment I have a piggy staying whose impaction is the worst I have come across.:( Poor little guy needs doing daily, sometimes twice a day, and he really hates it, despite having treats afterwards. He is 5 now and is quite stiff on his back legs, as well as having the worst pea eye I have come across - all in all I think the poor little chap is beginning to feel his age. On the plus side he is eating well and greats me with happy wheeks each time I go out into the shed, despite my assault on his nether regions!:)

Keep up the good work, after my initial daily cleaning with our old guy he eventually only need help once in a while - the joys of boar ownership.:)
 
I did the same as Glynis with mine, used a cotton bud carefully. I didnt think it was possible but mine isnt impacted anymore :S i assure you he used to be though!
 
This old boy was pts this morning. He seemed fine last night when I gave him tea and put him to bed but this morning he was very weak. The vet said he couldn't feel much food in his tummy and he was dehydrated. He was also very unsteady on his feet so we decided it would be best to let him go. He was over 5 but I have only had him 3 months.
