Noticed tonight Monty had a swollen rear end, had a good look and poor chap was all impacted:{ have cleared/cleaned the area and will keep a close eye on him.

Never noticed it before - I check his rear end daily - wonder if he will need this sorting more often now he is getting older - 4?

Not a nice job but done now - have done worse! Will check him again in a bit and in the morning before work in case he needs another clean.

Hutch has had usual full clean.

Anyone else had experience of this? None of the boars Ive had have had this before so new to me but had read up on it so knew what to do.

Has reminded me I'm out of probiotics must restock.

Is it ok for me to just keep a close eye on it or am I best popping him to the vets for a check do you think?

Not changed any of his foods or routines recently so must just be one of those things?

He seems happy enough now!
 
I think it's just one of those things, Alison! Some boys get it, some don't. The older chaps tend to be more prone to it due to less activity and exercise, which can lead to the weakening of those muscles. Unless you're otherwise concerned, there's no need for a vet check. Just keep checking and cleaning him, and keep an eye on his weight. I have one neutered boar with impaction, I check and clean him weekly (he only gets it mildly), it really doesn't make any difference to him at all.
 
Impaction happens quite frequently. I have one boar who needs "treating" once a day, the other impacted boar gets attended to about twice a week. Cause is unknown, there are a few "pet theories" but no-one is quite sure what causes the initial problem.
There is no need to give money to a vet to be told that impaction is "normal" in some pigs!

Thats good to hear - our local vets are not what I would call guinea experts!

Il keep my usual close eye on Monty:)

As long as Leo bunny does not start getting impacted as he is very grumpy with anyone checking out his bits - he does get a regular check that he is clean but gets in a right strop about it:))
 
two of mine have it. just make sure there no white round the edge of his bum. mine had this and it was a yeast infection. They needed antibiotics and cream but are all good now x (apart from the impaction) x
 
The peri-anal glands secrete a white exudate which, whilst normal, could be mistaken for a fungal problem.
 
I think this might now be a regular thing with Monty now, as have had to sort things the last few days. Quick and easy to sort so not a problem but think Mums glad I'm only away overnight next Fri not the whole weekend!

If Its nice and warm tomorrow I think it might be bath time for Monty.
