I have taken in two guinea pigs for PinkPawsRescue today.
Now they have arrived in foster, the young/mid aged girls we expected are actually two geriatric gentlemen, Bless 'them.
On examination, they both have impacted rectums, but one much more severe than the other and I evacuated a boiled egg sized lump of stinky, moulding yuckyness. His little penis looks to be 'thrushy/milky'. The muscle tone around that area is very loose and shows their age.
I have gently bathed both their bots with warm water with a splosh of olive oil in.. and they seem to be alot more comfortable. The smell is still in my nose though @)
Obviously, due to their age and their condition, they will remain here for the rest of their lives now. I accept I am going to have to manually evacuate for them as they need and have done this before with aged boars @15 years ago.
Could anyone give me some 'hands on' (excuse the pun!) advise though, please?
Any suppliments, or ideal fresh food which will assist their bowel movements?
All the piggies are only in hutches from 8pm - 6am - and have a cereal/hay feed.
During the day, they are on grass/clover in pens - and have fresh fruit and veg.
I am thinking the exercise will also assist any muscle tone?
Their general condition/weights are ideal.
Any advise gratefully recieved - they will be taken to the Vet n Wednesday for health checks as a matter of course anyways, but it's useful 'tried and tested' advise I am after from peeps here, please xx
