Just looking for some advice please! (Sorry for the long post but he's been poorly for 2 weeks!)

My 3 year old boar (Papanu's) wasn't himself 2 Sundays ago (1st) so I checked him over and he seemed fine, but was just in the corner with his hair fluffed up.
Checked him when I got in from work on the Monday and he had an impaction (first he's ever had) which I cleared, and then he'd built another one up by the time I went to bed, and had wet himself so booked him in with the vets on Tuesday.
Vet said he had a really full bladder which he managed to empty, and checked his urine and it was clear of UTI's and when he checked his gut it sounded healthy. His back was apparently a bit sore so he felt he'd injured himself somehow and thats why he wasn't using his back end properly. Gave him some metacam and advised to clear him out daily and see how he improved.

He was still impacting everyday (cleaning him out 3 tes a day) and the impactions were causing his willy to tuck inside himself and he was leaking urine when ever I cleared him out or touched his bottom. But he did seem much better in himself, was eating running about and I'd seen him drinking on at least one occasion.
On the Friday I managed to get him to do a wee by giving him a bit of a belly squeeze and he pee'd a fully sludge wee (orangy staining grainy horrible stuff). So back to the vets Saturday.

Vet reported his back seemed much better but again he had a really full bladder and when he emptied it out was really grainy and sludgy. Vet then thought he's now not weeing as alot of sludge has built up and it's uncomfortable so even though his back was better he wasn't wanting to poo and wee because of the sludge. He couldn't feel any stones.
He taught me how to empty his bladder properly and advised to up his fluids and clear him out and empty his bladder daily and keep up with the metacam and hope if we flush the sludge out he'll get back to normal.

I've been managing to empty his bladder daily and his still impacting constantly and leaking and his poor fur is so stained and wet I'm having to wash him every other day to stop him getting urine burn.
He's back at the vets Thursday and he said if he's no better he needs an x-ray and a bladder flush to see if we can get the sludge out and get him back to normal but I just feel there's something else going on here.

Is there anything else I can do to help him? Has anyone else been in a similar situation? Any thoughts on what could be causing it? I'm just at a loss really and he's really not happy having his bum and bladder fiddled with 3 times a day ☹️.

Aw poor boy :( I have had a piggy with bladder sludge before but never portraying the symptoms you describe so I’m sorry that I have no advise.

All I can suggest is to carry on with what you’re doing until Thursday or try and bring his vet appointment forward if you are concerned.

All the best x

How did you clear his sludge? I'm trying to give him more water with a syringe but he's not very keen and mainly let's it just dribble out of his mouth instead of swallowing it. He's on low calcium veg and I've been giving him plenty of cucumber as it's a bit more watery than most but can't think how else to increase his water!

She had metacam for the discomfort and lots of low calcium and watery veg such as cucumber and little gem lettuce. She ended up having a bladder flush and being opened up to see what was going on with her bladder that confirmed that her bladder was smaller than normal but we sadly lost her 7 days later. Whether it was linked or not, we just don’t know but Connie had problems for several months and was in a lot of pain.

I should also add that this was nearly 11 years ago and a lot of veterinary treatment and knowledge has changed since then.

Cystease is a cat supplement that coats the bladder walls from sharp crystals. May be ask yout vet if you could try giving that too? It isn’t a medication, just a supplement

@glassf0x Have you tried to seek a second opinion from a more specialised vet. Having to empty his bladder for him sounds very concerning. There must a reason behind it. I had a boar with terrible impaction and it never affected his urine output.

I agree with @Jaycey . Please see another vet with more experience.
Impaction doesn't cause bladder problems like that; it is - if anything - the other way round.
Have you had an x-ray of the bladder and kidneys to see what is going on?

They're doing an x-ray on Thursday if he's no better which I can't see him being. Yeah the vet thinks the bladder issues are causing the impactions, but I just don't think the fact the impactions are blocking his willy are helping him pass urine.
I'm not sure when he stopped passing urine for himself as it's not as easy to spot as less poo in the cage, but I'd say it was around the same time as the impaction started.
The guy we're seeing is the head vet at the practise but I do agree that doesn't mean he's a small animals specialist, likely the opposite.
And my boy is well in himself just alot less keen to be handled now because he knows it means us messing with him down there. He's just gone from being perfectly fine to this within the space of a day then he's been like this for two weeks, I'm just loosing hope he'll go back to normal really ☹️.
I think I'll see what the x-ray shows and then if I get no answers from this vet ask to see someone else.
Does anyone know roughly what an x-ray and bladder flush will end up costing? It's no question to pay it but knowing roughly what to expect will help!
Thank you for all your advice!

Sorry you lost your girl. I'm hoping the bladder flush helps and it is just that causing the impactions! X
