So Fuzzy seems to have reached the age (at 4 & 1/2) where he's getting impacted now and again.
This week however, he has needed me to empty his anal sack every day which is quite vom-tastic .

Can anyone give me any helpful info or tips on keeping on top of this? Or does anyone know how I can aid his diet (if possible) to keep the impaction at a minimum? if there's anything I should remove from his diet or give him to improve things I'd be eternally grateful!
 
i go through the same thing with seth my 9 year old unfortunately i cannot help much because it is a common thing for older males to get, i find that seth can get it out himself at times, this is a natural condition, i know what * mean it is vomastic and really smelly, i have been told changing food, veg etc will not help. sorry i cannot be of much help, if * find a solution please let me know.
 
The smell certainly brings on the gag reflex houwlp houwlp. I don't think changing his diet is going to help as it is his anal pouch that is holding the poo. Boys who still have their conkers tend to be prone to impaction more than neutered boys. His anal pouch may be ready for a good valeting. When a boar starts needing his bum emptied on a regular basis, there will probably be quite a lot of older compaction at the far end of his anal sac. This might be as hard and dry as piggy food pellets. There is a simple way to do this with a cotton bud lubricated with olive or mineral oil. The oil will help to lubricate the next lot through. It's a delicate job (as you can imagine) and it would be wise to see how its done before you try. See your vet or look online for tutorials.
The following video is quite good. I think she tends to do more swirling around with the cotton bud than is necessary. The boar has lots of smeggy gunk up his anus and that is what she is calling impaction, well technically it is but I wouldn't go to such lengths just to remove the smeg. Poo is another matter and the technique in the video still works. If you attempt it yourself, work with caution and compassion.

Thanks folks, yep already been in with the cotton bud lol, although I didn't know that using the oil helped lubricate the next lot through, I used oil last night and we have less impaction today, more regular poop, so will defo use some more, fingers crossed it was mainly old impaction like you say.

And 9!? Wowzers that's impressive! :)
 
I don't if if this is a remedy everyone can use but I've been fostering a boar before and after neutering & noticed that he had an impaction. Some days worse than others but needed a help most days. Usually I would just squeeze gently & sort of turn his bum inside out if you know what I mean, there would be between 1 & 3 poos mushed up & I just cleaned them away with a cotton bud & lukewarm water then cleaned the area & patted gentle with tissue.

We decided to give him a forever home & last weekend (6 weeks after his neutering op) bonded him with Minky & Minnie. Since then I've checked him everyday & he seems to have got over the impaction. I don't know if because he's with 2 sows he's using pelvic muscles that he wan't using when by himself but he's had no sign of impaction in a week. The girl who brought him into the rescue thought he was 2 but I suspect that he is about 4. Anyone else experienced this?
 
euwww i so know where you are coming from, Stan has started with a bit of impaction the last week or two and omg i can safely say my stomach turned euwwwww.

I have read somewhere that vaseline is good to use, you can leave a layer in there and the stinky stuff doesnt stick as much lol
 
Dindypig-"Conkers?!" i just about choked when i read that...too funny!:)) I have found that the smell is more tolerable if you can clean him out in a well ventilated area, and if possible outside (i know at this point you probably can't because it's getting cold out), but it seems to help. also, i have noticed that if you wipe his bum area with a warm wash cloth it kind of softens up the area, which can make it easier to clean out.
 
Brill thanks for that, can anyone advise me of a brand? And is it ok for his cage mate who is susceptible to uti's?
