Hi,

I just need reassurance and any tips regarding severe impaction in Boars.

I'm currently fostering a gorgeous 4 year old boar who is extreamly laid back.

However his anal sac/bottom was not in a great condition. He clearly never had his anal sacs cleaned out on a daily basis or had anything removed down there. As unfortunately his muck/debris in his anal sacs was extreamly solid, and large with shavings/hair stuck to it. It was a nightmare trying to remove this. I've had to soak this in lukewarm water for few days before attempting to remove this (As he hated this procedure) so did not want to stress him out in any way.

So yesterday I've finally managed to remove all of the impacted feaces/objects that was in his anal sacs. Also using a syringe, to soften the feaces, making it easier and less painful for him. I've never seen anything as bad as this. It was stuck to his skin, and it must've been rather painful for him.

Nevertheless he seems a lot more comfortable and relaxed afterwards. Since then I've not seen him trying to reach his bottom, and chewing around it. As I imagine this was causing some discomfort for him. Anyway I now check this everyday, to avoid any build up of dirt/feaces. Also to ensure this is clean and free of infections/build up of puss.

But I am struggling to remove the puss that was left behind, after releasing the hard feaces/debris. As this is permanently stuck to the skin. I'm pretty sure this shouldn;t be there nor it is okay to leave it, as it definitely can't be healthy for him.

So do you have any advice of how to painlessly remove the puss? Also is it normal to have that amount of puss in this area? I;d imagine this has never been cleaned out so, god knows how long he's had to put up with it.

Is it safe to bath boars genitals with Gorgeous Guineas products or do you only clean this area with lukewarm water only?

Thank-you for your time, I really appreciate it.

Hi! Please see a vet re. the pus; he may need an antibiotic to clear any infection the impaction has caused. It can happen in very bad cases of long term untreated impaction like the one you are sadly dealing with. No wonder your poor is feeling relieved! mallethead

Here is the Guinea Lynx article with pics and tips: http://www.guinealynx.info/impaction.html

Thank you for your reply.

Already read this article on guinea lynx (I Worship this website and regularly go on this)

I should've mentioned he's already got an appointment booked with the vets as his teeth needs a thorough examination. So I will make sure this gets checked out.

I hope this will heal and clear up soon afterwards. I cannot imagine what this is like. :(

Poor baby. I can only imagine how awful it must have felt for him. Well done for sorting him out- it's a horrible but necessary job. I hope it will clear up completely now. :)

Aww bless him, he's a lucky boy to have found you. I had a piggy with impaction and it sorted itself out after a few weeks of dedicated cleaning and a slight change in diet. Good luck with the vets x

Thank you.

I forgot to add - with regards to diet - is there anything particularly good for piggies with anal impactions?

I assume hes not had a great access to decent hay and good variety of vegetables. He was on muesli but lve converted him onto nuggets which he absolutely love thankfully. He also loves timothy hay, eats it as if there's no tomorrow!

So all of this should improve his general health. But his faeces are Everest long, longest I've ever seen. Is this normal? Should this be because of concern?

Thank you
