Is there any way to prevent impaction?

Since castration, one of my boys has developed an impaction problem. It is not a chronic impaction problem, but he does need his bits cleaning out roughly once every 4 days or so.

Also, what is the best way to clean out an impaction?

I don't know of a way to prevent it & have found all the neutered boys i've had have become impacted yet none of my intact boys are/have been.

I have found that probiotic helps - i buy Vetark Pro-C from P@H. :)

To clean my boars i use a baby wipe & gentle manipulation of the anal sack to expel the mass. You could use a cotton bud to clean near the opening but i'd not be sticking it in.

i dont know of anyway to prevent it,Boris had impaction and he was intact although i would say that cam hand in hand with being sick,
the best thing you can do is clean it as reguarly as it shows up,some pigs have it temporary and some forever,i know young pigs are most likely to get over it where as an older boar is more likely to have it permanantly.

There is no way of preventing an impaction problem. Some pigs may need "treating" twice a day, others once a week.
It should take less than 10 seconds to clean him out.
It is sufficient just to clean out the compacted pellets. There is absolutely no need to apply any ointment or whatever to the area.

The compacted pellets are not usually whole so it can be pretty messy. The poos that DO make it to the outside world are fine, dry and hard.

How IS best to clean out the compacted pellets? I don't want to hurt the little fella but just manipulating from the outside doesn't work?

I hold my boar kind of laid in the crook of my arm on his back (not outright flat on his back) with my left hand under his bum but fingers are free to hold him in place & with my right hand pull back the skin round his anal sac & manipulate til the lump drops out, or if there are any pellets in there & manipulation doesn't work by itself i pull them out!

It doesn't hurt him & i'm sure he feels a whole lot better once it's done & then i go wash my hands :))

VERY TRUE!
Get this stuff and you'll notice a mega difference! :)

My piggie has it but it doesnt get stuck in him ?/ It's weird it just slips out itself x

my late boys both had issues with impaction. Came and went. We just cleared their rears when it was needed. We also offered it back to them to eat (I know it's gross) for their gut.

BTW, Lennypig, haven't seen you on here for ages, hope you're doing OK.

MrsM, Yes I doing ok thanks ;)

I pop on most days, to nosey at new pics of cages and cute piggies. I just can't resist :))

I don't tend to post unless I need something or have something to add as I am so busy with work and running a support forum.

Hope you're doing ok too. x

love the new avatar. who's the piggy?

Hehe, I've had this Avatar for ages, ever since we got Archie (the pig in the avatar) from Helen (Hels) in March.

ah, well, yes, erm, dunno what to say now...

Anyway, he's lovely. I also have a rex (tex-mex, can't remember) from Hels called Frank, not in avatar (:))).
