Hey all! I know someone who is not caring for their males correctly whatsoever so I’d like to buy them off of her but I don’t think she’ll accept my offers. Is there anything I can do to help those poor babies if she declines? I’ve tried educating her on how to properly care for them but she refuses to listen

I’m afraid there isn’t really anything you can do if she refuses to listen. It’s sad but it’s her choice whether to take on your advice or just listen. Are their living conditions really bad?

They could be worse off! She doesn’t trim their nails, take them to the vet, the cage is a pet smart starter cage for 2 boars, they get fed food with the main ingredient being alfalfa (they’re adults), they don’t get enough hay daily.

What are the living conditions like? Are the owners aware of what good care looks like? Are they unable to afford good care or just choosing not to? Are her boys still getting along and not fighting?

Maybe try bringing little treats for them when you visit just some lettuce, pepper (healthy veg) so they're getting some good nutrition. You could offer to help build a big C&C cage just play it off as 'you've seen these sorts of cages online and they look really cool/ fun to build, and her pigs would love one'. Nail clipping is a tough one as it's never a fun job and is always harder the longer they've gone since their last nail clipping session. How bad of a state are their nails in?

Is she a close friend or more of an acquaintance, and yes she seem to love her pets or view them as more of a chore?

This video talks about bad hamster care and ways to approach it, but is also applicable to all small animals I think:

The hay is a big one - as long as there's some in there every day for them to eat that's fine but it keeps their teeth down so if they only get a bit and it runs out expensive dental problems could be brewing. Everyone I know people with pigs keeps them in different ways to me but the only time I've mentioned anything has been when they were on the 'last piggy' - then I've offered it a retirement home! But most of those piggies (all sows) have been fine in life and passed in their 5th year. One lady kept them outdoors and frankly didn't clean the 'bedroom' of the hutch as often as she should - just walloped more hay on the layers of poop/hay/poop/hay until they were quite near the roof! But they spent most of the daytime not in that room and whether by luck or not they didn't get flystrike or bumblefoot. If the boars are not fighting and seem OK they might just be very easy going boys. As far as nails go I just do mine when they look like they need doing - it depends on the age and I've found different pigs grow at different rates. It's kind of you to keep an eye on them though x

I’m not too sure on specifics as she got angry when I tried to advise her on how to better care for them and refused to speak to me further sadly. She’s also not a friend of mine so I never see her in real life, we’re more just people who know each other from far away if that makes sense!

She’s just an acquaintance, I should hope she loves her pets. I will watch this video and try to speak to her again, thank you!

HEY ALL! GREAT NEWS! OUR TALK JUSY WENT SWIMMINGLY! I'm HELPING HER OUT WITH CARING FOR THEM AND ATTEMPTING TO BOND THEM! I’m so happy and excited! Thanks for all your advice guys :)

Were they living separately? You said they’re in a pet shop cage. Glad she’s agreed. Hopefully they’ll live a better life now.

Yes I’d only seen one cage so I assumed they were together, but then she showed me another cage. It’s miniature still, literally the size of one of the ones that are deemed appropriate by pet stores, for hamsters.
