lol my turn now to freak out a bit, hope it's ok?

Today we bought a friend for John Anderson. I know it would've been nicer to get a rescue but I just couldn't do the drive to Perth. I feel so bad but just have to think I rescued him from the petshop instead.
We looked in 3 different petshops and I just have this feeling we've kinda done the wrong thing, although not that I don't want our new piggie.

His name is Bob and he is short haired, 3 colours (black, ginger and white) doesn't look too dissimilar to our hamster in colouring. He has dark brown eyes and one paw is black with black nails, the other paws are white with clear nails, and he is very very cute.

He was in, for want of a better description, a cupboard with glass sliding doors with 4 other piggies. The 'cage' wasn't even as big as half the size of John Anderson's cage :( We had originally picked out another piggie (possibly his brother cause had the same colours as him, the other 2 were different) but he had some discharge coming out his nose. The shop assistant was like oh it looks like milk (not sure why a 8 week old piggy would be having milk mind you unless ill) and said it wasn't there this morning. Bob appears to be healthy.

I just have this nagging feeling that our piggie could have something wrong with him too, I hope not and at least we now know the vets with having been with John Anderson. One of the first things we had to do when we got him home was cut his nails, they were really long, a couple starting to curl. But I know that even if he does some ahve soemthing wrong with him we'll take very good care fo him.

The shop assistant was very much no you should be buying 2 piggies, not just 1 and it won't get on with your piggie. At one point I thought she wasn't going to let us buy him, she was REALLY going on about it. So I feel a bit narked cause I've spent ages looking into how to bond males, learning about side by side etc etc. They suggested neutering John Anderson and while I know lots of people do it and are ok, I just can't bring myself to do that to John Anderson. I know that we can have them side by side if they don't get on and they will both be happy piggies. And that's considering we haven't even tried them together yet. And it's kinda tainted our bringing home a new piggie event a bit for me.

One of the other pet shops had 1 guinea pig, it looked all sad and lonely snuggled under a log bridge and I'm now thinking oh maybe we should've bought it (not that we knew if it was a boy or a girl, it looked like a mini version of John Anderson and my hubby said we'd be best to get one that looked different for a bit of variety LOL) and I know I can't have them all... (I've said to hubby that if we win the lottery tonight can we get a house with loads of room for lots of piggies :D

Anyways, back to Bob. I have him in the hutch with lots of hay and a fleecey blanket to keep him warm. He is TINY! compared to John Anderson. They said in the shop he is 8 weeks old so, with keeping them apart, he should be 10-11 weeks old when we introduce hiim to John Anderson (although I'm sure they will smell each other before then cause I'm cuddling them both seperately)
Have had some cuddle time with him already.

In the petshop he had hay and dried food but no fresh veggies...so I'm wondering if he even knows what veggies are. How do I go about introducing them to him? Do I take it slowly maybe one bit a day or just put in as I would for John Anderson and leave him to have a wee nibble here and there?

They obviously were giving vit C drops in the water, should I get some just so it's something he's used to (although I do think he should be getting his vit C from fresh food not artificial stuff)

I just want to enjoy having him but I just feel outa sorts after what happened in the petshop :(

I was exactly the same when i got mine, after getting them i read so much on here about how bad pet shops are and things that have gone wrong with piggies, i just had a feeling of dread that something bad was going to happen and regretted getting them, it was horrible! To put my mind at ease i decided to take them to the vets for a check up, so maybe you could do this just to make yourself feel a bit better. But i think it's quite normal to be worried with a baby piggie especially after your experience at the pet shop, but I'm almost certain that you know more about guinea pigs than the woman in the shop considering she kept 4 in a small glass cupboard and thought that it would be impossible to bond him with John Anderson! You are giving this piggie a much better life now than he had at the petshop even if (touch wood) you can't bond them and they live side by side! With regard to the veg i gave mine 3 small pieces of veg each per day at different intervals just to get them used to it the 1st couple of days, though i'm sure there is a propper way to do this! Try not to worry to much I'm sure evrything will be fine! But as i said i think everyone just wants to do the best for a new piggie because you feel responsible for them! Sorry i couldn't help any more! Good luck with the bonding O0

It is just natural instinct really so you may as well do it like you do with John Anderson, I mean pigs will still eat grass it even if they've never seen or had it before it is just what they do.

Awwww bless the little fella I hope he settles in ok. I would keep a close eye on him and make sure you wash your hands before holding John anderson just incase he does have anything iffy also weigh him so you have a good idea if he is loosing or gaining weight.

Thanks guys :)

Here is the wee mannie

bless him he is cute I can tell why you chose him :smitten:

Aww he's sooo cute! Similar thing happened with my first guinea Sunshine. He was kept in a cupboard with a bloody bunny! Really makes me mad now as I love him so much! The owner said oh you can introduce a rabbit but don't you dare get anymore boars! Ha, how wrong can you be. Sunshine and Twinkle where in one igloo this morning eating cucumber talk about being buddies!

Anyway, I think if you just keep an eye on your wee boy then he'll be just fine. I would go the vet to make sure, I done that with the boys and other than the mite problem with Cuzzy they are ok! :)

Have you a name yet? Maybe Gladiator or Wolf! :-DD

Take care,

Louise
:)

He is a little beaut!
Ok I hope this will help your mind settle! I am looking after a male pig who was one of my rescue pig babies born here. Now this pig is about 8 months and very dominant but he had a nasty incident recently in that he lost his brother to a fox or rat :'( ( a very sad story which wasn't the owners fault as their car broke down & they got stranded while the pigs were in the run). Today I managed to locate a young pig to bond with the surviver. I have broken all the rules and put him straight in the Coco (I do know that the new pig has been Ivomec'd and bathed etc so not too bad). Anyway the bonding between dominant boar and new comer has been the easiest thing I have ever done.

So don't listen to the horror stories I'm sure John Anderson and newbie will be fine. Good luck x

He is gorgeous, hope everything goes okay at the vet's,as for fruit and veggies I introduced mine little by little, when we got them from the rescue we were told only to give a small piece of carrot and a broccoli floret a day,but after joining here I added little extras everyday and learnt what they did and didn't like,it costs me more to feed the piggies every week now than it does to feed a 38kg dog ^-^

awww thank you so much :) Your experiences and thoughts have really helped :)

Went in to check on him this morning while giving him his brekkie...found he has done a couple of really soft poos..I take it this is just his body being introduced to the fresh veggies? I've not given him cucumber today (he had some last night) and just to keep an eye on him? He has plenty of water, dried food and hay to eat.

Ah, Bob's so cute! ;D

I wouldn't like to venture an opinion on Bob's soft poos, it might well be the shock of fresh veggies. Not sure about the vitamin C in the water, I agree, Thistle Cavies advises that you should never put anything in your piggie's water. I'm sure you're keeping a very good eye on him and you'll probably know if he needs to go to the vet, but a general check up might put your mind at ease. You're being really sensible about the quarantine period.

On one hand it's good that the woman in the shop was advising you to get 2 piggies, but on the other she was probably just trying to get you to pay for two! Try not to let the experience bother you, you have your lovely new piggie now, and the handsome John Anderson too, of course!

Best of luck! O0

i'm sure he'll be fine with your care. O0 try not to worry hun, and i'd aggree to just let him get his vit. c from veggies etc.
good luck and you can't rescue all the piggies so just enjoy him and look after him well, he should be ok. O0 oh yeah and i should take him to the vet for a little check up, thats what i did when i got mine and i still give regular check ups.
