My guinea Paddy had an operation on Tuesday of last week to cure his bladder stone. Unfortunately no bladder stones were found. His stitches have healed fine but the issue is weightloss and appetite. He is now off Baytrill and only on a small pain relief medication. He will not eat on his own- we have tried everything and we are having to syringe him every couple of hours with recovery. Today he began to poo, it was quite loose but there was lots of it. There is still blood in urine but the vet has told us tonight its probably still due to some of his bladder area being inflamed. The vet told us that he does not know what else to do except us to put him back in with his brother, keep syringing and hope his appetite and weight picks up. It is very upsetting keep seeing and hearing him suffer. I do not know what else to do!
Do I try with him for another week or do the humane thing.
I'm very upset and confused please help!
I would be grateful for any advice given

I understand how frustrating your position is, I know 10 days after his Bladder operation my Patrick was still urinating blood and crying. Unfortunately I can't remember exactly when he stopped I think it was around the 12 - 14 day mark. I kept Patrick on painkiller's up until he stopped crying in pain.

Patrick was still not eating correctly 7 days after operation, in fact he went downhill again. I would say Day 12 was the day I knew Patrick was back to himself.

Will he nibble any food at all?

Have you tried Septrin? It is an antibiotic that is a lot kinderon guinea pigs guts. Also diluted cranberry juice syringed to piggy as much as he will drink. Ocean spray light is a firm favourite amongst members on here.

Has a bladder flush been done? This can help to flush any crystals or sludge from the bladder xx

He just isnt interested in any food but he does seem bright and quite active although much slower than usual! For the first time since the op he has just had some water by himself. The vet said because he is in pain he may be off peak. The recovery seems to be ok, hard work but its making him full and going to the toilet and he has not had diarrhea at all. I'm hoping being back with his brother may spur him along to get better as they have been together for 3 years and love each other. I am currently giving him metacam ( the vet told me to continue it for the rest of the week) a cystitis relief that the vet gave me and some multi vitamin drops which the vet also advised. I'm just not sure how often to give him the recovery, we have been giving it him every couple of hours when we have been at home.

Thanks for the advice-i really dont want to give up but I dont like seeing him suffer He seems to be gong backwards not forwards.

If he's been on baytril, have you been recommended to use a probiotic? Many vets won't prescribe septrin as it isn't licensed for piggies, but baytril is known to be tough on the good bacteria in the gut and pigs often need a bit of help with it. Your vet should be giving you enough metacam to keep the piggie comfortable, and if he still continues to decline food, it might also be worth having a quick check at the (back) teeth as sometimes these can be overgrown and prevent the piggie eating. If he hasn't been eating for a while, the teeth could have gone from a small overgrowth to a big one.

Antibiotics are normally prescribed for 7 day's after operation to stop SECONDARY infections. An antibiotic's will do nothing if this is pain related to surgery, which is plausible as i said P was 100 % still crying and urinating blood 10 days after his operation. He was not on any antibiotic after day 7, up to day 7 he was also on Baytril.

The vet could send a sterile culture away to the lab if he wanted to check for an infection within the bladder.

Hand feeding is always an option, guinea pigs often exept food when it is given to them by their owner. i am very sorry about your pig's problem and i hope he gets better soon

How much of the recovery should he have? I dont think we have been giving him enough?! We are trying everything at the moment but he seems very weak.
I dont know how to check his teeth, and what do I do if they are overgrown?

Is he eating anything at all other than the recovery food? If he isn't eating he needs 120 mls of syringe food per 24 hours.

You won't be able to check the back teeth yourself. You will need to ask your vet to have a look. Ideally you need buccal pad separators to properly see the back teeth in detail, but you can see them generally just using a scope.

ok thats helpful. The vet gave us the recovery but didnt tell us how much to give him. when we dissolved the sachet there looked loads so i know for a fact we havent been giving him any where near that amount. I feel so guilty now because he hasnt been able to cope with that amount of food in his bladder after his op.
Ive already gave him quite a bit today! If I try and get this sachet down him tonight and in the morning that should be ok.
Do you think he will pull through as I dont think ive been feeding him enough?!

Thankyou so much, I love my piggies and the last thing i want is to contribute to his downfall
