Hi I'm just trying to get a clear answer on the subject as people have so many different views it's hard to work out what situation is better.
Thanks

I haven't voted as I don't think there is one clear answer.
Everyone will have their own different views based on lots of factors like where they live, what space they have indoors and outdoors, who they share their living space with, budget, etc.
So you have to think about your own circumstances and what will work best for you.
For example if you have your piggies indoors do you have the space to offer them a clean and suitable environment which is away from things like cigarette smoke and continual loud noise (tv, stereo), and are they are always safe from other pets like cats and dogs? If not then they may be better outside in a well insulated shed.
If you have your piggies outside is their hutch protected from bad weather and in a sheltered position and suitably insulated for the climate in the country that you live? If not then they may be better inside.

The thing is I'm (still) trying to persuade my parents to keep MY guinea pigs inside in MY room as Dad doesn't want to have to build another shed as all (3) the sheds have machinery (he likes cars).

OK, so where do your piggies currently live and what is their set up?
As a parent myself I have a few tips on what works with parents and what doesn't.

I've voted on what is best for me and my guinea pigs. I have voted inside as I have no outside space so I have no choice! Even if I did, I would still keep them indoors :)

My pig (boar Dad doesn't want another pig ) is outside on one side a wall opposite side a chicken run and the two ends one has hazelnut trees the other a chicken hutch.

I vote indoors, especially if he's alone because pigs get very lonely. I mean he'll still be lonely if he's indoors and really does need a companion to be happy but being outdoors and alone is worse than indoors and alone.

Can you dad read through this forum? Whether people are an indoor or outdoor kind of person we all agree that they need a friend.

As for your original question, indoors you can regulate temperature better as their natural temperature range would be about 17 degrees celcius - 24 degrees celcius (but ideally lower than 24). If you're in the UK our winters get way below 17, hence why I say indoors! :)

Also if you can give him more space he would really appreciate that :)

Without a doubt indoors
I like to see a poll as to the life experiences of indoor verses outdoor pigs!
When I used to keep them outside many years ago, (30, odd years ago) they used to live around 4 to 6 years! But since I started to keep them in doors , there average life span is 9 to 11 years!

My pigs only have the option of indoors because the climate in Ontario where I live is not conducive to them being able to survive outside during the winter. It can get bitterly cold here! That said, I like having them inside... I see them all the time that way.

Hmm I was premature in selecting outdoors as mine are outdoors and I've noticed a lot of benefits to them but they are a group and not a lone pig. I would never leave a lone piggy out a way from any company. When daisy was on her own while trying to find her a companion she became very chatty and dependent on us for company which was heartbreaking as she was clearly lonely. At least having her indoors meant she could chat away to us

My dads not a big reader so I was going to see if I could find a video to explain it to him. Do you think I should make a video or find one on the internet if so do you guys know of a good video?

If I was to bring him inside I would make him a 2×5 c and c cage. :)

That's a good idea, I don't know if there are any videos actually.

A 2x5 would be a great plan, big enough for two boars

Maybe you could explain why they need to been in for the winter and how much cheaper it would be than a new shed, then hope he doesn't push for getting them back out in the spring

The weathers terrible at this very moment and I was going to go and ask dad if I can keep him inside overnight.

If your dads anything like me if it's not causing a major issue and you don't mention it after, he might not send them back outside :P

I wish Lauren f I asked him a minute ago if I can put him inside tonight he said no but I showed him the weather forecast and he said he MIGHT let me put him inside over night so we're getting somewhere

Good luck with persuading your Dad. I keep mine outside in a wetherproofed hutch with a run at the bottom which I have put a false floor on as it went straight onto the ground. This would obviously be too cold for twenty feet (I have 5 piggies btw) in the winter. I have various warm hideys and snuggle safes etc. I keep my Piggies outside as I have no room for them inside.

I recall reading somewhere that you were located in Scotland.

Now I don't know much about British and Scottish climates but is it not a bit cold that far geographically north in winter?

How long have you had your boar?
Is this his first winter?
If you are planning to keep him outdoors year round, do you have thermal/waterproofing covers to help keep him cozy in thecooler seasons or are they unnecessary in your location?
Could you convince your parents to let you keep him indoors over winter if it's cold?..maybe you won't have to move him back outside after.

Chippys 1 year and 12 weeks I've had him since he was 10 weeks old.
Last winter him and biscuit were in the greenhouse but that's not possible this year because Dads planted stuff in there and he has to keep them in there and I don't want Chippy in there as he would be able to eat the plants and at least half of them are toxic.
If he was to stay outside I would definitely buy covers.
And this is not his first winter.

This is what I did whilst finding ted a friend. He came indoors with us.

100% inside and at best a shed. I would never have my pigs just 100% outside in a hutch. Too many predators and health risks. Plus the English weather is so rubbish it's often not fair to leave guineas outside, with their delicate respiratory systems and inability to regulate their body temperature very well.
