Hi all! Haven't posted in a while because things are going (relatively) well with our boys. Sadly we lost Mario a few months back, but happily we welcomed Harrison, Oreo's 3rd cagemate (is he murdering them?). Harry's skittish w/ people but otherwise very happy, and Oreo seems happier as well.

Anyway.

Looking for advice on how to... how shall I say this... make it less obvious when you open our door that we own guinea pigs. We live in an apartment in a hot part of Los Angeles, and in summer we must keep windows closed and A/C on, plus we have dogs, so it gets rather, uh, fragrant in here. We use fans at night but cross-ventilation is not very good so its' hard to air the place out.

Our boys live in a C&C with a Coroplast tray. We clean the cage every 2-3 weeks, using large bed/pet underpads with two plastic poop trays (one in the hide, one outside), covering everything with a generous layer of wood shavings. (I used to use lavender-scented paper.) We hose down the dirty mats and usually, but not always, machine wash them. I generally do not clean the coroplast tray.

We free-feed our hay, which we buy by the bale, not bagged, piling it in and letting the pigs spread it around. We don't always remove used hay, since the boys love to burrow in it, but clean the cage when it piles too high.

We have a Homedics HEPA air purifier, vacuum the filter regularly but don't change it often. Seems to me this gizmo used to work a lot better than it does now but maybe that's my imagination.

I noticed in today's cleaning that the two plastic trays we use for poop, now about three years old, have a crust of poop that won't go away, even with steel wool.

No one in the house smokes, we don't use perfume or cologne, nor any sort of air freshener gizmo or spray (we're open to air fresheners, not smoking or cologne).

We don't do butt-cleaning ourselves but take them to LAGPR every 3 mos or so for a check up (we're actually overdue).

SO -- I would be grateful for any advice you can give! I have some specific questions below, but would appreciate any guidance.

1) Could the plastic trays and their poop-crust be part of the problem? Should I replace them with metal? (Would prefer not to regularly put more plastic in a landfill.)
2) Is there a better solution than the Homedics air purifier?
3) Should I go back to lavender paper shavings?
4) Should I replace the coroplast liner? (Man, I hope not, what a pain in the butt it was to make that thing!)

I thank you, my wife thanks you, and Oreo and Harrison thank you!

If I’m reading correctly, I would say your issue lays primarily in that you say you clean the cage only every 2-3 weeks.

Any areas of wet shavings and hay needs to be removed every day (certainly every other day) - wet hay is generally the biggest cause of bad smells. Definitely continue to throw fresh hay in a loose pile every day but make sure youve removed the wet stuff before you top it up.
A full cage clean will need to be done once or twice a week - with any fabric bedding used needing to be machine washed at the same interval. Hosing down will not clean any fabric beddings.
I would wipe and disinfect the coroplast once a week.

However with boys, and when it comes to the full clean, it can actually be that it needs to be done in two halves: clean ie fully remove the hay and shavings and fabric bedding in half the cage one day, do the same to the other half the next. This is because when you remove and clean all bedding in the entire cage in one go, you are fully removing scent. That will disrupt them and their territories and cause them to scent mark even more and thus makes things smell worse.

Mine are fully bedded on shavings and hay. They tend to pee in one corner so I scoop that wet area of bedding and hay out every day (twice a day in summer) and replace it all. Poops elsewhere in the cage are removed once or twice a day but the dry bedding elsewhere in the cage is left. Fresh hay is thrown in twice a day.
I then fully remove all bedding (whether it’s wet or not) every 5-7 days.

Don’t go back to the lavender scented items - we do not recommend any scented bedding is ever used around piggies with their sensitive airways.

If your plastic trays are beyond cleaning, then yes replacing them would be a good idea. I’m not sure I’ve seen anybody using metal trays - id be worried that they may be sharp

I find that a basic clean every 4 - 5 days and a deep clean every 2 weeks, approximately works well. Occasionally I do this more often.
I’ve never had any smell problems.

Basic clean every- clearing all hay out the cage and any poops lying around.
Changing the noodle mats and fleece bedding.
Deep clean - the fleece liners also come out and whole cage cleaned with F10, white vinegar solution or cage spray.
New fleece liners as well as noodle mats and fleece tunnels.

Guinea Loft on Amazon makes cardboard cage liners that are water resistant and can be disposed of, so you might be interested in these. I second getting rid of wet hay and damp woodshavings. If poop gets damp, after a week or so, it smells and that smell clings, so poop management is important.

Hey! Thank you all, it sounds like we need to do more effective (and frequent) poop management. Will look into cardboard liners. I had not thought about sharp edges, so will look for a tray with a rolled edge, or just live with plastic. Trying the vinegar today.

Thank you again!

Damp hay smells horrible. So as others have said, clear any damp hay daily and do a poop pick at least once a day. I tend to poop pick in the morning after morning cuddles.

I clean mine out every 5-6 days in the summer and every 3-4 days in the winter. Mine live on fleece in my garage and in the winter the fleece doesn't dry out so well so get's changed more regularly. I give it a deep clean every couple of months. I always spray the hutch with F10 when cleaning it out.

Brilliant I'm always apprehensive about getting the wrong thing 🤔
So the sc just stands for super concentrated then? 🤔

Yes

F10SC is just a disinfectant. Ie you have to clean with something else first.
F10SC X D is also fine to use but it has added detergent. So this one can be used to clean and disinfect in one go

I forgot to mention - this is really interesting. We don't get much drama after a full clean so it hadn't even occurred to me that any territorial disputes might be more, uh, fragrant than noisy.

Didn't Nirvana write a song about this?
