A few members on here have skinny pigs, it is just a different breed. What is so shocking about it? :{

Thats an American site, they are hard to get hold of here which is a good thing as they need more special care than the furry kind!

Skinny pigs are just a different breed of piggie :) I have to admit I have never seen hairless cats though rolleyes

Oh yes Hairless breeds do exsist. A handful of people have them here. They aren't in petshops and rightly so they need specialist care more so then hairy pigs. Ah your post made me smile.

Not into hairless cats though, no offence but they do remind me of defrosted chickens! :(|)

Hmmm......

Well i just don't think i expected to see them completely hairless, not even a little tuft of hair anyway..... Just a shock i guess.... they must be sooo cold, never seen or heard of them before so **** the reason why i didn't really know what to make of them......:red

Well this is in the paper both yesterday in the sun and today the mail

I've been to helens (hels) and met Arthur and Merlin (is this right?) they are skinny pigs and very beautiful, as long as you have some sort of fleecy home for them they are ok. Both of hels were toasty warm and extremely friendly. They do eat about 3 times as much as normal guinea to keep warm but I am glad they aren't available through pet shops. If any needed homes I'd deffinatly sot say no :))

however its a shame they are the 'new must have pets' because no doubt people will not look after them properly and I can imagine soon we'll see alot in rescue centers :(

I thought it was an American thing!

What a coincidence, the day I see them they are in the paper.....

The more I look at them the more they look like little rhinos; I would soo want to keep them wrapped up in my dressing gown all day..... I’m really intrigued now, so have they always been about, or are they bred to be like that?

They were origianlly bred for skin testing/ lab work over 30 yrs ago but for some reason have made their way into the pet trade now highly sought after :(

They to me look like mini Hippos and have a strange feel to them but warm, its hard to explain really lol :))

Awww I love Skinny pigs, they remind me of baby hippo's :)p so cute and adorable. I really do hope that they do not become a 'must have pet'. Guinea pigs themselves are seen as exotic pets and thousands end up in rescues, just imagine how many skinny pigs would probably end up in rescues when people suddenly realise that they're not so easy to look after :(

according to the papers they are already the new phase in must have pets .. poor things.
Just as well people like us would be willing to take them in an snuggle them.

Oh forgot to say you shouldn't really keep them with 'normal' guineas as the skinnys are easily injured with having no hair :(

Awwwww, well now I definitely want to meet one.

At least I feel totally enlightened, and not freaked out by bald guinea pigs.... still sounds odd though, and i too hope they don't become a designer pet, i mean how can a pet be designer anyway, its so wrong how people use them as an accessory.:(

Sorry me ranting again!

Ta very much peeps! :))

well i have to say i did get a shock when the page opened!
never seen them before but they are sooooo cute!

i have seen reports about these in the papers. i cannot belive people would condone the breeding of them. it makes me angry.
breeding is wrong when there are so many unhomed piggies out there, but to breed an animal thats not meant to be that way is cruel. its just like designer babies. why cant people be happy with the gifts the world has given us,
sorry rant over lol

yes exactly they are made from in-breeding which is horrid on its own never mind intentionally..
But its not the piggies faults :(

I think that although they are very cute piggies it is horrible to think why they were bred in the first place and it makes me sad :(

I think only certain people should be allowed to have them as hairy ones are hard work enough & i can imagine people putting them in hutches and surely that is not possible even in summer.

The one in the article was very cute :)

Yeah its horrible to think why they were made this way but I do feel now they are here and we can't deny their exsistance. I do hope that those with the knowledge and know-how continue to develop the breed and make them stronger. Those doing it for profit well I find it horrific in all honesty. I have heard that they don't live as long as your regular cavy but not sure if that is fact or just a myth. :)
