Inbred Guinea Pigs.

Someone I know has got two female guinea pigs that are pregnant. This was and accident as she thought she had three females. She is going to need a home for the little piggies when they are born and ready to be adopted. My mum is interested in homing two but is worried there will be a problem as we believe there are inbred. They were apparently sisters which now turns out to be a brother and two sisters.
Has anyone else had a inbred Guinea pig and were they ok?

We believe our Podrick to be inbred (and in turn he bred with his sister and mother).

He's been perfectly healthy for the past 3 years other than a random nose bleed which we think was from a piece of hay poking up his nose. He's a sandwich short of a picnic but he's definitely healthy.

I imagine quite a lot of accidental pigs are inbred to some extent ? My three girls came from a situation where a lady found she had too many pigs when they kept breeding so I figure there's some insest somewhere! I don't think you can worry too much about it - life long health is never guaranteed

I have a one eyed guinea pig who is not inbred. I have 3 inbred pigs that are perfect in every way

Although I'm not 100% sure if my girls, Maya and Baby (litter sisters), were inbred, I have a strong feeling they were. When I took them to the vet , she had noticed both of them had odd shaped jaws and their teeth weren't really aligned the way they were supposed to be. None the less they were both happy and playful piggies, all the way up until their passing.

In my experience you never truly know the ancestry of piggies, I couldn't tell you much about my babies' parents or their parents. So it's likely many people have inbred piggies and don't even know about it.

As long as they're not a lethal white or a satin piggy (who really have been inbred to distraction and only live about 2 years) then it'll be absolutely fine

Thank you all. My friends piggie had three little piggies tonight. Mum and litttle one are all fine, thank goodness. A lesson learnt I hope. My mum going to rescue two so they will have a good life. X
