Incompetent Vets

I’ve written strong words to both vets; he was so underweight on Thursday. I am so ANGRY

If you wasn’t happy with the care given
You are within your rights to complain. It was awful what happened to that rabbit and the vet involved deserved to be named, shamed and struck off

I miss him terribly. Worried about cinnamon now as we will struggle to find a piggy friend for him I think. Early days but he seems ok. We’ve bought a new snuggfe bed which he likes. He’s with me now. Bless.

Are you okay if I report back here from vets? I will need to share!

You are more than welcome to share and I know I would like to read the reply! The only thing we’re not allowed to do is name and shame. Believe me, I would have loved to have that that with the vet with the rabbit but I think it’s against forum rules

Of course. I’m not a big fan of naming and shaming. I want to see what they say and why they failed to help Peppy and help us help him. Thanks

Just to let you know I’ve had a response from both vets regarding peppys care. Vet 1 (24/11) claim they took an appropriate course of action. They failed to diagnose impaction AND address weight loss. Although our peppy’s recorded weight is lower than the reported weight at the consult. Vet 2 claims they gave a guarded prognosis. I don’t remember this, nor does my daughter. This vet did NOT address the weight issue either. What she did do is ask how much metacam the previous vet gave as she couldn’t remember the ratio of meds to body weight. This calculation alone would have confirmed that Peppy had lost more weight between vet visits. The 2nd vet gave metacam, antibiotic (not penicillin) and gut motility drug. I did not think she gave a guarded prognosis and once impaction was removed she noted that he had passed a normal faecal pellet. We have since been informed that there is a vet in Lancaster at Bay Vets who treats all the rescue pigs at Animal Care and he is brilliant. Wish we had got an appointment with him! Can I ask if you think this is worth pursuing with the RCVS? I feel very strongly that the 2nd vet should, if she thought necessary, advise pts to save Peppy from suffering. We were left none the wiser, not informed about suitable ongoing care (return visit) or prognosis. There’s not much we can do for gps she said. What nonsense! I really think on reflection she couldn't care less. There was no compassion or empathy expressed when examining him for example. My daughter also came away with the same impression (quite independently - i know this because she has been reluctant to talk about it all) that it wasn’t a grave situation we were in. Although peppy greeted me cheekily on Sunday morning and my daughter spent all day on Saturday with him hand feeding and syringe feeding water, he was dead within 48hrs of seeing the vet 2. I have been through so many scenarios in my head ... can I ask if tou think I should pursue beyond my complaints to the practices? I have also found an exotics vet in Preston, Lancashire and I am thinking about asking if they would be prepared to comment on the care / lack of care given. I will pay. Any thought on this anyone?
Our remaining piggy cinnamon is doing ok so far - we have reconfigured our c&c cage so it is bigger and better than before! Root would love it! Both piggies knew our adopted rabbit.....we always monitor interaction of course! We are still considering adopting an older boar but keeping them in parallel cages - I’m told it is virtually impossible to pair up 2 strange boars? It is difficult to accept the loss of a pet in most cases but accepting a death - which I believe was avoidable - is even more difficult, especially knowing that he probably suffered. I think this will stay with me for life.

@Blooberry - I am so sorry you are going through this :( It is never pleasant to lose a guinea pig - but it is far worse when you feel you have been let down by the advice of professionals. I understand why you feel about taking this further - but I am not sure whether it will get you an outcome … and , It won't bring Peppy back.

In answer to your other question … it IS possible to pair up an older boar with another boar. Not all guineas get on , and , as a forum , we highly recommend contacting one of the rescues on our rescue locator who offer a boar dating service .

Please remove skypipdot from my thread - I don’t need jokers on my thread when I’m going through a very difficult time. The support on here has been a godsend! Thank you - all of you.

Thank you veggies galore. I think you’re right about this. Perhaps not worth investing my energy in. Closed shop no doubt. We’ve spoken to our local animal rescue and she is not very positive about introducing another boar. She says it very rarely works. I’ll read the guidance and get back to you.

Hey sorry. I didnt realise what the thread was about. No harm meant. I wouldnt try and hurt someone especially going through a hard time👍 i understand you must be angry at me but i thought the thread was a rant about bad vets. I think i got mixed up with a similar titled thread, genuine mistake of mine. I have owned up already and removed my comment out of respect for you.

I will not reply to anything else on this subject, i dont want to spam your important thread with junk

Huge hugs. Have you been sent a copy of the complaints policy for the vets practice? That should outline your steps if you aren't happy with the response so far.

One thing to consider is how will this help? It obviously isn't going to change things for you so how much you push depends on whether you believe things will actually change for future patients at the practice. Perhaps ask for a copy of peppys history first to have some time to look over their records and see whether you think they have been thorough enough, that will also give you time to consider whether you would like an independent vet to view the history to see if the same care could be expected elsewhere

@Blooberry I’m so sorry you are going through this and have then been upset by a post from another member. Unfortunately the staff don’t have time to read all posts on all threads. There is a report function at the bottom of a post. If you press report the staff will be alerted to the thread and post and will deal with it. I sincerely hope you won’t need to use it much (if ever), but the report function is a very good way to communicate quickly with the staff about a post or thread.

Lady Kelly this is great advice. The hope would be that future poorly piggies are treated better. I did ask over the phone regarding expertise and i was reassured! Thank you.

Thanks so much Clare. Really appreciate it. Can I ask why you think I shouldn’t pursue? We have now found a vet in Lancaster who is cavy savvy - could we add details to the vets locator? Might be a life saver for others? Interested to hear your thoughts. So far it’s been a indignant ‘ we stand by the advice given’. Shame on them.

If it will make you feel better then by all means pursue. And if the vet was really that incompetent, they shouldn’t be treating small pets. I just don’t want you getting hurt.

@sport_billy is the guy who updates the vet locator so mention your news vets for his attention and he will add it :)

Thanks Clare - you may be wise to recommend caution. Maybe incompetent is too strong a word but they didn’t provide the relevant care and diagnosis. Big failure on weight loss etc. In my heart I know it’s not going to get me anywhere. Will it make me feel better - I dunno. x

..but might help some other piggies?

I think while you see a point continue but have a good think about where you draw the line, especially if you are then going to pay for an independent vet to consider the case history. How much do you spend on this? How much energy do you give it? I commend you for what you have done so far, if it weren't for people like you speaking up things could be much worse for a lot of people. Only you know when you draw that line of enoughs enough

Thank you Lady Kelly. You’re right - how much money and time? We’ll see ... hope I know when to draw the line. Christmas is feeling very unappealing this year!

I'm sorry you have received inadequate care..you are a very caring piggies owner.the only reason I would be pursuing this.not for revenge or money.to prevent this occurring to other .cavies.vets apparently get very little training on cavy care.you have to do what you think is best for you.sending hugs and support.xx
