Incompetent Vets

Thank you very much Eileen. I am still struggling with what happened to our little boy. I part blame myself - ignorance and definitely the vets who I relied on to help us. Couldn’t get an appointment with the vets i now know would have helped - small events often have massive/ tragic consequences. I will never not trust my own judgement again in future! x

Received a letter from the clinical director from vet 2 before Christmas. Wasn't good timing I have to say but at least they have responded in detail to my email. They state that they find no fault with the consultation. However, they accept that they should have provided a critical care package for Pepper to use at home and advise regarding this. This will now be available to guinea pigs and rabbits at the practice. A small success I guess.
However, I am not happy about some of content regarding the consultation and would question many elements of it. My daughter and I are agreed that the report does not reflect the actual consultation.
Could I please ask for some advic regarding the following before I respond? Peppy was given Marbocyl (injection) Metacam and Emeprid. I do wonder what the point of the antibiotic was and the one off use of Emeprid. Although not communicated at the time, the vets notes report that Peppy had reduced gut sounds. Is this then a point of no return? Could the antibiotic have exacerbated this?
Is an faecal impaction the same as a blockage? My daughter told the vet that we had been giving Peppy 0.15 Metacam but when she checked the dosing the vet said that that he needed this to be reduced in accordance with his weight further flagging recent weigh loss.
The report says that there is a 0.1-0.5 g dosing regime according to the datasheet, but I suspect this relates to use with dogs and cats - why would she advise a smaller dose if unimportant? I will see this through as I need to ....at least I have drawn their attention
to the lack of CC although we were failed miserably. Thank you and here's to a happy and healthy piggy new year!

I'm sorry you have received inadequate care..you are a very caring piggies owner.the only reason I would be pursuing this.not for revenge or money.to prevent this occurring to other .cavies.vets apparently get very little training on cavy care.you have to do what you think is best for you.sending hugs and support.xx

Eileen, I posted this message onto the original thread earlier but not sure if I need to start a new thread? Would you know? I kept it here for continuity. Thank you.

1) Antibiotics are sometimes given to cover all bases. It's not always obvious if a pig has an infection so they sometimes prescribe it just in case
2) Reduced gut sounds isn't great, but it's not a death sentence.
3) I'm not a vet so can't guarantee but I would think that if the gut had stopped working then the antibiotic would have just sat in his stomach and not done anything. It doesn't do the same thing so wouldn't have made it worse.
4) Metacam tends to be dosed in smaller amounts for pigs if vets are using the dog/cat guidelines. It also depends on what strength it is. The logic behind reducing the dose as a pig gets smaller makes sense but if they're only on it for a short period of time it's not so much of an issue if they have a higher dose.

Thank you Jacey. What about the gut motility drugs. Is there any logic in a one off dose? Also, impaction is also a blockage? I think urgent nutrition was the issue even though we were syringe feeding water and hand feeding food. He seemed quite Spritely on the Saturday and Sunday morning greeting me. I have some favourite veggies and then 30mins later found him unconscious. Tragic.

Hi,if emperid had been given then the gut motility would probably have improved.the lack of cc and motility drugs could have caused gut stasis.you have been very diligent to ensue this.xx

Thank you Eileen, so are you saying that a one off dose of gut motility drugs is useless? So lack of cc and ongoing gut motility drugs could have caused gut stasis?
