Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has ever had any problems with incontinence in their piggies post general anaesthetic. Our boar went under yesterday for X rays and bloods with our great exotics vet, as he has been losing weight. Absolutely nothing showing up on X-rays or bloods (a whole battery of things tested for including liver, kidneys, thyroid etc) which was surprising as thought something may have shown up. Since coming home, our boy teddy has been getting drenched in his own urine. I bathed him twice today, and checked on him after his evening bath and blow dry to find that within half an hour he was sodden again.
I have been in touch with the vet by phone, and he has asked me to monitor for a day longer, but he wouldn't usually expect this as a response to anaesthesia or the non invasive X-rays. It may be a coincidence that he has become incontinent the day after being at the vets perhaps? Currently I am syringe feeding to supplement ensure he is getting enough nutrients, although he is eating well. He is on metacam in case he is in any pain. He still has the "shell shocked" look of being post anaesthetic.

Not in search of magic answers (though that would be nice!) but if anyone has experienced similar and how they dealt with care/bedding to prevent sore skin that would be really helpful.

Yours worriedly ,

Angela X

Really sorry to hear your boy isn't well. I've had a few piggies go through anaesthesia and never had this issue happen. Hoping another member might be able to shed some light

Thank you, I am wondering if it is not at all related to the anaesthesia and was going to happen anyway? I'm worried about him getting sore and cold (he is indoors in a non draughty room with his girls, but with him being skinny and wet he is probably very uncomfortable ☹️

Sorry to hear this. My piggies have never had this problem after anaesthetic. Hopefully it’s just due to stress or nerves and that it settles down, has he had a urine sample done? It’s possible that he has a Urinary Tract Infection or Cystits which may explain the weight loss and incontinence. Good luck x

Do you have any hibiscrub? You could use that with a cotton pad to clean him once or twice a day to try and prevent any infections from building up

Please change the bedding where he is sleeping and sitting most 2-3 times daily to prevent urine scald and infections of the foot pads.

Best contact the clinic to make sure that it is not a cystitis, which can be triggered sometimes.

I am giving him 0.3ml metacam twice a day. I am bathing and blow drying twice a day(he is unimpressed) to minimise urine scald and changing bedding frequently. He is currently on fleece/AstroTurf/aubiose with hay combo. Thinking about putting care fresh in areas he sits and sleeps in the hope that that has more direct contact with his body and absorbs more dampness. I last spoke to the vet last night and am phoning him again in the morning. Stress related cystitis sounds like it could be a possible. He hates going to the vets and gets very anxious and obviously very shell shocked after his anaesthetic too.

Thank you everyone X X

One of my sows had this reaction to Buprenorphine post op. Please keep a very close eye on his fluid intake, check him for dehydration daily & see your vet for sub cut fluids if he shows any sign of lethargy or dehydration.

My boy Ted had GA for teeth problems back in July. He had urine incontinence for a few days after. Got vetbed which helped, and bum wash 3 times a day. He was fine after 3 days, put it down to Anesthetic or possible bruising while being handled while under GA. Has the vet checked his teeth? could that be the reason why he is loosing weight? We ended up at Simon Maddox Northampton (dental specialist for piggies) as original vet did not solve his teeth problems, he is now fine.
Hope your little piggie gets well soon X

Slow reply I know, but been off the forum for some time! Sorry! Teddy turned out to have an infection causing the incontinence, which is now all sorted. Still losing weight though, and since he has had X Ray's, bloods, urine and faeces all show up as fine he is a bit of a mystery. Teeth are fine, everything on X-ray and visualised examination showed them to not be a problem and they are now using teddys X-rays as an example of what a piggy should look like!
Vet is trialling him on thyroid meds, as he is still losing weight whilst eating normally and also being syringe fed, but no effect as yet. He is acting normally, and has never been an overactive piggy, just regular, so not quite fitting the profile for hyperthyroid, but something to try. Poops are also becoming alarmingly small, look like hamster poops not piggy poo. Really worried for him, as vet says if it isn't thyroid it will be something more ominous, like a hidden cancer or similar.

Sorry that things are still not right for Teddy. Hope you are both bearing up.
The worry over a sick pet can be exhausting

So sorry your little chap is still not out of the woods. Small poos is a sure sign he is not eating enough. Keep up with syringe feeding and try tempt him with hand feeding his favourite foods. It’s such an awful stressful time for you, hope you find out what’s happening and he gets better soon x

Yes, teddy has been tested for parasites and nothing showing up. We tried the thyroid meds and he kept losing weight. He's now eating less than he was (but still eating hay and veg just losing interest more quickly ) and is on 70ml critical care a day, still losing weight! Our vet doesn't know what else to suggest right now, but know he won't give up on him. Back for another appointment early next week and a repeat of bloods unless things rak

Hope you find out what’s wrong with your boy soon, we are rooting for him x
