Hi everyone

I wonder if you could give me some advice. I am taking care of my mum's piggies while she is on holiday. I had to help Mum bath one of the pigs last week as she was all wet around her back end. I had to bath the same pig again today as she was soaking and very smelly. I do not know the pigs age as she was a rescue but we have had her about 2 years and she was adult when we got her. She has had babies in the past (before we got her). She does seem to be drinking a lot more that the other pigs but otherwise is bright and happy and eating normally. What are the symptoms of a urine infection? Do you think this may be the cause or is it more likely just age related? I can take the pig to the vets before mum gets back if need be.

Thanks for your help.

Hiya,

It does sound like cystitis to me, good that she is drinking as it would help to flush it out but I would take her the vet for their professional opinion.

If she is constantly wet it is a sign of badder or kidney problems for sure. I would get her to a rodentologist in the first instance then they can refer on to the vets for xrays etc if needed.

Good luck with her.

I agree about taking her to a vet.Could be age related, i..e arthritis making it difficult for her to lift her back.Could quite well be an infection although with cystitis they normally cry and strain when urinating. However as she is drinking a lot this would have the knock on effect of making her pee more.Excess drinking indicates a renal problem. When you go to the vet take a urine sample with you for testing.
