Has there been real increase in the amount of abandoned animals recently?

I am not a rescue but I've now had a third person contact me about taking in unwanted piggies. This time it is 4 young boars aparently they have been abandoned in a box at a vets! i suppose at least they were left in the right sort of place rather than the side of the road.

I have no room to take them in though, i think the vets are going to try to rehome them or take them to a local rescue(if they have space!)

If anyone would like them i can forward you the details

Definitely an increase in people trying to get rid of animals, a combination of the time of year and the economy, unfortunately, and everywhere is very full with unwanted pets (not just guineas).

It is such a shame that people are using the 'credit crunch' to get rid of unwanted pets - apart from vet bills, it doesn't cost that much to keep most pets. The amount that you do spend on them won't go far towards anything else.

No but unfortunately they are the first thing to suffer when people are tightening their purse strings .... sad but true.

I keep a list of reasons why people give up their piggies when they come to me, and top of the pops is still 'the children lost interest', closely followed by 'lack of money/ time'

i'm sorry, but these people shouldn't be allowed to have pets. if i only had £5 left,i'd spend it on the piggies. they come first every time, they didnt chose to be owned by me,but i bet they're glad they are as i spoil them every day!

I think the problem stems from people thinking they must have certain veggies each week and if they don't have them then they will die! This isn't the case at all, of course its nice for them to have all the variety in the world but right now its not possible although personally I do try and give as much variety as possible.

I guess many people are genuine when they rehome, they never thought they would be in this financial situation others take advantage of it and use it as an excuse. Its sad and I can't see much changing especially at the moment, even if rescues charged for accepting animals back then more animals will find themselves just dumped in the street! :(

That's it - my girls aren't get totally spoilt just now but they are getting everything that they need. I'm trying to buy most veg that are on offer with maybe 1 thing being more expensive but can be cut up to last longer.

i agree. We have had lots of piggies in the last two months and i have another 10 coming in next week.
