Hey, so we’ve recently got a heat wave. The pigs are happy in the garage as we normally have really cool weather, they’ve not had to deal with such heat, it gets pretty warm and uncomfortable in there and I’m wondering if I can move my indoor cages outside? They’re just the normal metal ferplast cages, not hutches. Will this be okay to move outside or are those cages dangerous to be kept outside? As I worry they’re not strong enough to be outside

You really do need a hutch if they’re to live outside. A ferplast or any other type of indoor cage would not be suitable.

It wouldn’t be permanently. It’d only be during the day for the next few days whilst the heatwave passes. I’d bring them all in at night x

I still wouldn’t use that type of cage outside. Could you maybe set up a run for them? If you’re going to be outside supervising? You’d still need to be wary of the heat.

I have a huge run but I have 7 pigs and there’s only 1 pair. All the others are separate. There’s no other way I could get them outside really. I work tomorrow and Tuesday morning 11am-5pm so even if I could put them in the run, I couldn’t leave them alone in it. Which is why I’m thinking the cages seem like the only option, as they’re built at all sides with go gaps in them

Could you move them indoors instead?

I’d try but mum would go mad and move them back out. I’ve tried explaining but she doesn’t want to hear it. She thinks I’m overreacting n she doesn’t really understand

I’m pretty stuck for ideas tbh, I’m really stressing about it. I worry so sick about them at work even if it’s only for the few hours. I just think taking the cages outside for a few hours is the only option. My mum would be there to just check on the cages outside

Would your mum not acquiesce to just a few hours? Or is there space in your bedroom for some of them? The worry with those cages outside is being exposed to the heat. Sorry, it’s a tough one and I understand your stress.

How hot does it get in the garage - temperature?

Hi

Indoors cages are really not safe or stable for outside; any fox or determined cat can get at them.

But you may find our hot weather guide helpful. LOTS of little practical measures that in combination can make a surprisingly big difference. People usually just provide a cooling element for the cage but there is so much more you can do which is incidentally something you yourself can also profit from.
