Hi guinea friends,
I am luckily moving to a house where I will be able to have room to house my guin girls inside over the winter. Delighted! So... I wanted to pick your brains... what sort of set up is the best bet for indoor living? They will be in a heated and lit conservatory but prob on floor level to start.
Thanks in advance.

:agr:

the absolute smallest cage for two girls is 120cm x 60cm but a 2x4 C&c is recommended size for two sows as it is bigger than a commercial cage At 150cm x 77cm

I’d definitely try to get them off the floor if at all possible in a conservatory as the cold penetrates up through the floor unless it’s got underfloor heating (and then again they would need lifting off the floor for different reasons!). So I would aim to lift them off the floor. Conservatories tend to have big swings in temperature so please bear that in mind when considering whether to have a fully open cage (c and c style) or a more enclosed cage or hutch.

Space wise, can you get really large ferplasts? Does a c and c set up give more opportunities for enrichment? Thanks

Yes. They have a huge hutch at the mo and I guess the downside of coming in is that their housing will be smaller....

Good point. Will aim to have them off the ground. So I guess a ferplast cage or similar is the best bet or can c and c cages be lifted up?

The biggest commercial cage is a ferplast plaza 160 which measures 160cm x 60cm (external measurements so it’s actually slightly less than that on the inside) so is smaller than a 2x4 c&c.

for a lot of people c&c cages are the preferred option as they can be flexible and made into different shapes Etc to be able to fit the space available. You also can just add to the them in the future but popping a few more grids in. while upper levels don’t count towards the cage size (any cage needs to meet size requirements on the ground floor level) you can add in a second level if you want to make a separate hay area for example

how big is the hutch they are in?

My cages are made with the c and c grids and connectors but I gave up on the correx bases. My OH made a base from plywood and the cages sit on that on top of tables. Works very well for us.

My pigs have a c and c set up indoors and we have built a stand with c and c grids. I love my c and c as we’ve added to it/changed the shape as the boys have got older and it’s really easy to add bits on! I wouldn’t be without a c and c now :tu:

Do you have to cut the correx bases? Or can you get them ready cut?

To my knowledge it comes in set size sheets so you will have to cut it.
when making a c&c you usually actually score it half way through to enable you to bend it up the sides of them cage to keep the bedding in (more useful if you’re using disposable bedding)

Thank you. Can you reccomend where yours is from? Also I see it is raised. Is it quite sturdy underneath?

I buy C&C cages ready cut and scored. The packs come with grids and fasteners so you can create a setup that fits.
Mine is L shaped to fit the room.
It’s awkward to take photos but hopefully this gives you an idea of my setup
