Indoor or outdoor?!

Hi, I'm new to the site, I joined up figuring that other piggy owners might be able to help me out more than the rest of the internet that been able to!

My boyfriend and I have two pigs, about a year old now, and we've recently moved in together, so we have a lot of free space now.

Before living in the new house, the pigs lived in a pen in a conservatory area, but since we moved they've been in a hutch out in the back yard. It's well covered, on legs and out of the draft, so there's no problems there, but I am keen to have the pigs in the house, in a room of their own.

Sorry to be so long winded, but basically what I'm asking is, are the pigs better off indoors, and if so, what sort of housing would you recommend?
Also, are they likely to smell a lot? This is the first time they've lived in the same house as me, so I'm full of questions!

Thanks, I really appreciate the help!

I've dragged the hutch into the living room for the meantime, but I'm hoping to get a nice new cage sorted by the end of the weekend, I've got a whole room to fill up with piggy pens!

Hi and welcome to the forum.
My 2 Piggies have their own indoor cage each and they live in my bedroom (living with parents for time being) and they are cleaned out every 3 days so they dont smell.
I do also think they are better indoors as its warmer for them as the weather is playing havoc at the moment and sudden drop in temp can cause countless problems with piggies
.

That's the main reason I moved them in, I just felt so guilty leaving them out in the cold. Like I said, they're well protected from the damp and any wind or rain, but, as good as my intentions are, it's sometimes hard to remember that they're out there and they don't get played with as much as either we, or they, would like!

There are so many advantages in having them live indoors.

They are inevitably tamer, it's easy for you to pick up any changes in behaviour indicating possible illness and they get far more handling and attention generally. Fluctuations in temperature are less likely in a house too and the drier atmosphere suits them better. It's also possible that they will have more time/space to exercise.

The bond you have with them will likely to be stronger too and it also means you're not outside in the rain/cold when cleaning them out.

Good luck with your new set up :)

I keep mine indoors and I think its great - I speak to them all the time whenever I'm passing the cage and if I've been eatting a bit fruit/veg then I'll save a little bit of it for them too - which they wouldn't get if they were outdoors (apart from their dinner).

I also think it is great fun watching them running about the livingroom while I can just sit back and watch the television knowing that they are safe and warm.

Well, the pigs were moved inside this afternoon, and after much mess and moving things around, they are finally comfy!

We've got a whole little set up to let them run around in, but it won't be suitable until I get a few things tomorrow.

In the meantime, they are running laps of the living room, creating complete chaos, as per usual!
