ive got my 2 baby boars in a hutch outside but ive really tempted 2 bring them in but my partner thinks they will smell and look silly in the front room, I'm on the other hand *** really like them outside and think they would become more tame if we have them in the house,
what would you recomend if i was to have them indoors? should i keep them on shavings?
i *** quite understand the fleece liners in the cages, also can you buy corner cages?
all comments are very welcome ?/?/?/

My piggies came in when it was cold, and now only go out on sunny days. You really get to know their characters indoors. I change the fleece every 3-4 days and clean the currents up daily and get no smells. They are brilliant indoors.

I have both an indoor herd of pigs (5) and an outdoor herd (9) and they are all completely different. I dont really handle my outdoor herd, just to check them over from time to time and i really like it this way as i like to see how they function without much human interaction. However they do take food from my hands and are completely used to having me around and al start wheeking at me when i walk up the gardenpath. However i do worry about them in the winter cause it gets extremeley cold and i am now moving them into a heated shed.
My indoor herd are still a bit wild as they are a new group but you do get to know their characters so much better and they are getting used to us being around them all the time. I actually find the smelliest part of my cage is the fresh hay that i put in for them each day, but thats quite a nice smell, and it does smell a bit on cleaning out days but not for long. I use vet bed which is really absorbant but a lot of the forum members use fleece with a linings of towell. 2 guinea pigs will not really smell anyway. xx

We have 2 females that are two years old and have always been indoors in the liviingroom.

They do get like part of the furniture, we have had 2 set ups. First we had their 2 berth cage placed on a 5'x3' sheet of perspex with the cage always open and a ramp to help them in and out. That way they have the shavings down and their sleeping area filled with hay. We bought some white fencing from a garden centre to go around the edge of the perspex to keep them in. They had load of room and happy.

Secondly we had a 6' apex run with the plastic tray part of therr cage at the one end and a ramp down from it, this again worked well.

I would say that you do need to keep on top of cleaning them out or they do smell if left ay longer than 5-7 days max, so if your parter is concerned you need to make sure she isnt unhappy with them.

We are just in the process of putting ours outside for the summer months but come the end of September they will be brought inside again.

Cheers

I have 2 boars in a large cage inside and as long as you keep on top of the cleaning (i.e. spot cleaning daily and full clean every 5-7 days) they really don't smell at all. Before I got my two people kept telling me that they smell but I think it's just a common misconception. I've personally found fleece to be far more practical. I did use megazorb but it ended up getting dragged through the flat as everytime they popcorned it went everywhere (I would imagine wood shavings to be very similar). Hopefully you're OH will come round to the idea.

My indoor pigs get a full clean every 3 days and do not smell the best bit you will have from indoor pigs is a welcomeing 'wheek' as you come through the front door

I've only ever had two inside, an elderly man who lived inside for the last year or so of his life, and his wife who we added when she got really ill and needed an emergency spay. Their characters didn't change that much inside, but Oscar was 6 when he came in and his wife was 4.

They were already really friendly pigs, so we just got to see a lot more of that. We loved having them inside, but we can't do it permanently because my mum's allergic. She made an exception for these two though (and currently a sick piggle who's been cared for by them while I'm at uni revising).

When I get my own place (which won't be for another few years yet!) I'd like to have them inside. But when I'm looking at probably having 12 by that point (8 now, I want to add two boys; one for asbo pig and one for the rest of the herd, and two long haired girls), they're going to need a whole room, let alone a corner of a room somewhere!

I have three indoors. I clean them out once a week. Sometimes more. I came home from my mums today and they went barmy when I walked through the brekkie room.

all 11 of mine are indoors and have kept mine indoors for over 3 years - i couldn't bare them to be outdoors - mine are kept on vet bed and washed every 7 days, but hoover all poops out etc every day - they only get smelly when its coming up to wash day on the bedding - i love having them indoors!

Our 6 are inny pigs, I've made an 'L' cage from the grids to go around a corner, our sitting room is a weird shape. They are on vet bed, the thinner stuff 'only suitable for whelping' with newspaper underneath. I clean them out regularly and we don't notice any smell.

I love the fact they want to be involved with everything, they seem to eat when we eat, (but I guess they never stop) every time the fridge is opened or they hear chopping they wheek like mad.

When I was a child, my pigs had to be kept outside, and in the shed in winter, I find them a lot better inside.

well he has point blank refused to have the piggies in the house but has said he will build me a shelter in the garden for the pigs and the rabbit so i can spend time with them regardless of the weather :(|):(|):(|)

I've got 6 indoors at the moment, the others are outside, but once I've got the hutches sorted there will be only 4 indoors. Those are my two lone boars that absolutely hate each other (they are happy to live side by side though with only some mesh separating them, weirdos lol) and my blind piggy who feels the weather changes a lot more than the others, obviously his friend will stay in too. I don't mind them being outside, I don't really miss the interactions that much any more, but everyone is different.
