what do guinea pigs prefer?

We live just south of Aberdeen so not exactly warm, we had sort of planned to keep the guinea pigs outside but now are thinking it might be too chilly and a bit damp. Our other option is in the garage, not heated but well protected from draughts and damp and not too hot either.. completely indoors is not an option

Provided your garage is un used as in not used for cars (exhaust fumes can kill) your piggies will be ok in the garage.

Depending on the summer temperatures, you could have them outdoors during the summer months and in the garage during the winter months provided they are living in a well built and stable hutch.

Hi,

All my animals live indoors and just go out to play in the secure back garden when it is a lovely day. Otherwise they have playtime inside each set taking it in turn. My rabbits roam free all the time in their room.

Knowing how much colder it can get up your way I would suggest you seriously consider having them in the garage if you can. As long as you do not use it for cars as the exhaust fumes will kill.

Depending on how cold it gets you may still need to provide additional warmth for them as I assume the garage will still get very cold.

I personally know I would not sleep at all worrying about whether mine were cold or not outside. At least when they are in the house and the house is warm I know they are and also I can get up in the middle of the night to check on them all if needed without going outside and freezing myself to death :lol!:

I guess it's all about deciding what is best for them with what you can actually do. At least you are starting to think about it now before winter really starts as the mornings in Glasgow are already getting colder

Garage not used for car at all! No space what with the bikes and toys and ..everything else :)

SSPCA man agreed that garage was best and still might need a duvet cover in the winter. Will have a run outside for the warmer days that do occasionally happen and a run in the garage too

Oil filled radiators are both safe and ecanomical to run , and would take the chill out of the air :san:

My pigs are indoor pigs, but then again I live in Canada and they would quite literally freeze to death even in a shed/garage over the winters here! I do have an outdoor enclosure that I let them play in during the summer months, but having them live outside is really not practical in the climate where I am.

My lot live in a shed, which is insulated with bubble wrap and I have an oil filled radiator ticking over during the winter months- the shed is lovely and cosy when it's on!

As long as you can maintain a temperature of at least 10 degrees C (15 would be better) then garage would be OK. You may consider using heat pads on the colder nights though. Also put cardboard boxes in which are filled with hay & the piggies can get inside to snuggle up cosily. Also on cold nights an old carpet draped over the top of cage or hutch would help too :) x

Mine are outdoors, they are sheltered with a well built hutch and a decent cover.
It would need to be unusually cold for the Midlands for us to bring them in overnight.
I have had guineas on and off my whole life and they have always been outside
I have never had any problems.
But you know the area you live in and the temperatures it can be.
So if you live in siberia then indoors only :-)

Not in Siberia but close to Aberdeen.

I have been monitoring the garage temperature. So far it goes down to about 12 in the night and early morning then up to 15 during the day.

My eldest son has Aspergers and is quite scared by the gp's so in the house is not an option, but we do have a back room with the washer/dryer/freezer in that they may have to come in to.. Not sure what they will think about the noise and vibrating floor though!
