I recently adopted two new piggies from Hazelcroft rescue who I've called Margot and Jerry. Margot has recently developed a bit of a sore tummy (although she's very bright and perky). She's producing FAR more poops than she should as everything is whizzing through her system a bit too fast, and the poops are very rounded and soft. She's being seen at the Cat and Rabbit Care clinic and so she's in good hands, but I just wondered if anyone else had experienced anything similar?

Kim said her intestines are a bit inflamed and she's slightly uncomfortable when prodded in that area. Because she's inflamed, food is rushing through her system a bit too quickly so it's not being digested properly and coming out squishy and in copious amounts. At the moment, she's having Zantac and Metacam plus a diet of hay and readigrass only - basically no fresh food at all (she hates me :soz: ). But she's maintaining her weight well and is very bright and perky so at first glance, there's no outward signs of illness. I've put a vit C additive in her water whilst she's on a restricted diet (as is Jerry- he hates me even more LOL).

ETA - I've also given her a poo-transplant from Jerry's healthy gut as per Kim's advice. Now that was an experience! Poo soup in a syringe - Mmmmmmmm :vom:

Poor angel, sounds like she is in good hands though. Has Kim said if she will ever be able to have veg?

She was fine when I got her and was eating all sorts of veg with no issues so something has made this flare up. I initially thought it may have been too much fresh spring grass but she's been off that for a couple of weeks now. Hopefully, her gut will calm down and we can start to gradually reintroduce veg items one by one.

She could have an infection in her guts, overgrowth of a bad bacteria. May be worth sending off some poo samples for analysis.

My elderly rescue yorkie had a similar issue- she had quite strong E.Coli levels in her stool and was treated with antibiotics for a month which cleared it x

Thank you - that's certainly something to bare in mind. I'll mention it to Kim on our next visit. Today has been good actually - the quantity of poops has been much less - although they are still very round and squishy. She's very active, bright and perky though - and busy stuffing readigrass down her neck!

I would recommend to cut down on any fresh food and just keep her dry food until the poos have normalised. Then re-introduce veg gradually again.

All the best! You are in safe hands with Kim; she is very careful and thorough when diagnosing.
