My 4.5 year old sow crunchie was at the vets today. I noticed last week her conjuctiva along bottom line of her eye was slightly visible, no redness, pain or any change in her at all. The next morning when i went to check her, it looked normal again. Yesterday it was back up again, moreso than last time. Went to the vets today and had a good check. She said the conjuctiva is more inflammed than the left eye, and is ever so slightly red. No obvious pain and no discharge. Eye itself is healthy, no ulcers, scratches or foreign material (checked with dye.) the eye itself isnt swollen or bulging at all. i have been advised to bathe with cool boiled water and monitor for 2 days, if no improvements we will try antibiotic drops.

At first i thought it was fatty eye developing as this is what it looks like. But upon looking at previous pictures (even up to 6-8 weeks ago), the conjuctiva is slightly visible in some but not in others. So I'm a bit puzzled! Any ideas?

It looks like the first stages of pea eye/fatty eye where the conjunctiva becomes visible over time. It is not quite uncommon especially in older guinea pigs.

Thank you for that. Do u think i should continue bathing if it is looking like fatty eye? I dont want to irritate it if it isnt bothering her. Also do u think a try of antibiotic eyedrops is safe to do? The impression i got from my vet was to try the drops if it doesnt settle down. But i dont want to aggravate it if i dont have to.. "If it isn't broke.." sort of thing!

If it's not inflamed or bothering her, then I would leave well alone. Creme Fraiche has had fatty eye for some time now and, other than being a bit more prone to picking up small pieces of hay in there, it doesn't bother her at all. Just keep an eye out for any irritation or dryness and review the situation. Should it dry out (unlikely, as she should still be blinking normally), some Viscotears or similar, might well be an option. :)

I agree, I have a few with fatty eye (often the heart pigs but not always) and just leave it alone.

I agree, I leave mine alone as long as they are not dry or inflamed.
