Namaah
Junior Guinea Pig
Not sure which forum to post this in as it's really a few different questions in one post, apologies if this is the wrong place
I recently adopted a pet from the pets at home adoption center, He had a sign next to him saying he had been in the store a while and needed a loving home. I was under the impression that I was adopting a pet that had been surrendered for whatever reason an no one was adopting him. I read somewhere today that the majority of the pets in the adoption center aren't actually rescue animals but animals that are past the age the shop will sell them at. It also said that all the pets that say something like "I've been in this store for a while...." are always shop stock that are too old for normal selling as pet shops wont sell piggies over 12 weeks old. It also said that after 15 weeks they remove them from the adoption center. Does anyone have any more info on this?
If this is true then my piggy should be between 15 - 18 weeks old at most so still has the hormonal teen thing to go through. I've tried to work out what age he is but I'm really not sure, I know you cant tell exactly what age they are especially when they are older but I would like to know if he is over 1 year or under. I read something about the nails being different when they get older but I cant find any pictures to compare them to. I weighed him today and he is 790g , I've found info that says adult males should be between 900g and 1100g but nothing about what weight younger guinea pigs should be. Does this mean that he is still under a year old or just a small adult? Does anyone have any other tips for working out age?
If he is under year old what is the best option for getting a friend for him. Unfortunately there is no rescue centers near me to take him piggy dating and I would really like to avoid having to house piggies separately as I don't have the space for 2 cages. The two options I've been thinking about based on what I've read are either getting him neutered and getting a female piggy companion or getting an older boar (about 3 years+) as he would have more chance of bonding if they weren't going through the teen stage together. Which option do you think has the most chance of success or is there a third option I'm not thinking about.
