I thought I would start off a new thread were people can put information that might be handy for someone considering a guinea pig or someone who has just become an owner/slave of a guinea pig so that there is a reference for people to go to should they require imformation.
Guinea pigs are sociable creatures and they should be housed in painrs in a cage minimum 4 foot by 2, they are naturally shy creatures but with lots of love and attention they will soon come out of their shell and gain your confidence. Don't handle them for the first day or so to give them time to get used to you.
Piggies need a diet that is high in vitamin C so fresh veg daily is a must they also require fresh water and hay daily and have a dried food in their bowls the meusili type is best. Guinea pigs need their teeth, nails and if long haired their fur attending to on a regular basis.
Guinea pigs also need love and attention. They need handling and playing with daily and should not just be tossed to one side and forgotten about.
If housing guinea pigs outdoors, they must be in a suitable hutch that is bolted and / or padlocked to stop predators from gaining access. The hutch needs to be placed in a sheltered area of the garden / yard so they are sheltered from the wind and rain during the winter months and from the hot sun during the summer months. The hutch can be placed in a shed, outbuilding or an unused garage to further protect them from the weather. During the winter months, lots of hay needs to be provided to allow the guinea pigs to snuggle up and keep warm. Carpets and tarpaulin can also be added to the outside of the hutch to add extra warmth.
Guinea pigs should have access to an outdoor run in nice weather to allow them some freedom and fresh air. An indoor run should also be provided for bad weather.
Guinea pigs should NOT be moved from one temperature to another as big changes in temperature can be lethal.
It needs to be taken in to consideration that if a guinea pig becomes ill, Vetenarary treatment can be expensive.

me to just changed mine over to a pellet food and they are eating it alot better.Umm advice on guineas they love fresh food and veg will sometimes need an occasional bath .
I think that pellet food is much better if they will eat it - it provides everything they need in one piece instead of them having to eat every piece to get correct nutrition.
Also, mixes often have things like seeds in them which pigs shouldn't have.
