Hi forum,
We are a little worried about our female rescue guinea pig Jiggy, but unsure whether or not its just in heat behavior in combination with her previous living conditions or if is she injured.
It will take a little explaining to give a clearer understanding of whats going on with her but I'll try and keep it brief. First there was Steven and Gavin, who my partner bought home not long after losing our furchild of 19 years, after work she asked me if i would mind if she bought a guinea pig from local pet store, luckily I agreed because she already had them and there new pen in the back of the car, they were both boys, Gavie was the ditzy one who was all bravado and thought he was all that and more, Steven was quieter, but much more intelligent and after he realised how good a back scratch could be both boys became easy to handle and got along fine, gavie would sometimes try to mount steven from the side thinking he was winning and steven would let him go for a bit with a look of 'thats not how this works you idiot' and 6 years later steven died 5 minutes after a pat, rolled over sideways with legs in the air and looked like he had a heart attack, no ill health signs to warn us or anything just here one minute gone the next, but gavie lived on another 3 years, to keep him company we contacted a few advertised free to good home pigs looking for a suitably aged pig that was alone as well and the first one was never quite right, and passed away 3 years later, leaving gavie alone again, so once agin we looked for a companion and found Jiggy, Jiggy is absolutley adorable but the outdoor cage she was kept in alone for a few years had a wire floor a foot off the ground so she has always had this tight rope walking thing going where she walks on tip toes and balances with her whole body an inch off the ground, needless to say within an hour of meeting gavie in her new home she went from such a sad looking girl to the most thankful and happy and friendly pig you could imagine. Gavie who was now 9 at this point sadly passed away due to old age after 6 months with Jiggy, And she was devestated, So sad! So once again we got another rescue adult piggy, quite quickly because she seemed to look resolved that things had returned to lonelytown again. The new mate was living alone in a chicken coup with chooks and was a little wild, and after a week of hiding in the house in our pen we started to realise she was a he and whereas Gavie liked mating from the side and only with boys, the new boy Hugo got Jiggys attention and she started presenting her bottom to him and generally acting 'In Heat' which cumulated in her doing laps around the pen whilst doing a complete handstand, both back legs above her head and walking just on her hands, after doing a few laps she eventually lost her balance and went ass over tit and since then its been a day of just holding one back leg up in the air and walking around. She started to look more like she was injured than strutting her stuff but we checked her out, all seems fine, colour is good, still eating well etc, gave her a little bath to double check for signs of injury and nothing obvious, but noticed a couple little drops of blood on the towel from her nether regions. So anyway, is this a behaviour others have witnessed related to her being in heat, or does it sound like something is wrong either with her leg she holds in the air when she walks or something internal with her lady bits? she doesnt seem herself in last 24 hours, although she is still eating and can move when she wants too. Just worried that she may be in severe discomfort and just not displaying it.. Any advice would be appreciated Thanks.

Hi and welcome!

Please have her vet checked as soon as you can.

Holding the leg up can be a dislocation of the joint, a break or a serious strain. It needs a hands-on vet examination to work out what is the case and to get her pain relief.

Sows do not bleed when in season. Any bleeding from the anus should be taken seriously (womb or ovarian cysts going wrong; the latter of which can cause behaviour like a sow is nonstop experiencing a strong season).
Here is more information on seasons and femal health problems: Sows: Behaviour and female health problems (including ovarian cysts)
