I'm looking for a bit of advice. Our boy Badger has had an outer infection for a while and he received the canaural drops and anti-mite meds. He came off the drops, but the head tilt returned, this time with nystagmus, and he was prescribed septrin with the drops for an inner ear infection. He has been on it for over 2 weeks, but yesterday the nystagmus and head tilt returned in two episodes. We gave him the septrin slightly earlier than the 24 hour period (2 hours) and gave him some metacam (after speaking to our vets). He is fine now. My question is whether anyone has experienced this before. He looked dreadful yesterday, and alongside his other problems, it's quite distressing to see.

My guinea pig had a middle ear infection and was on antibiotics for 12 weeks, she's off everything now and touch wood seems ok!

Thank you Amanda, it sounds strange, but I find this reassuring. I was under the mistaken impression that it would take 1 to 2 weeks.

Ear infections can take a long time on antibiotics to clear because its difficult for them to get to the source of the infection. If the eardrum is intact you can use antibiotic ear drops which will help speed things up. My pig had a CT scan which identified the ear infection (her only symptoms were that she was painful when she was eating and losing weight as a result, but her teeth were fine), and the scan showed that her eardrum had ruptured so ear drops weren't safe, so we just had to put up with a very long course of antibiotics

Thanks. He is on the drops as well. I think we were spoilt, because he had an inner ear infection in 2011 and that healed very quickly. I hope your girl remains well now, poor little thing. I sounds quite painful.
