Hi guys! So I'm thinking about insuring my guinea pigs (and rabbit when I get them) for those little emergency situations! Ever since Cookie; I've been thinking it's been worth doing so I won't have to worry about massive vet bill costs. I do have a job now and I'm saving money for things like cars and moving out; University (I'm looking to do an online Biology A Level which is 400...ow...) and putting away some for emergency bills!

I wanted to ask what insurance you guys use and how you'd set it up? I'd prefer one to pay monthly and it will cover anything above 100; if you pay a certain amount upfront for large procedures etc. I'm not even sure if this exists and I have no idea how to look so I thought I'd ask the more experienced! :P

Thanks guys ~

There is only one insurance company in the whole country that covers guinea pigs - that is exotic direct - part of pet plan - 2 years ago I had nearly £1800 worth of vets bills - nothing since then - so I was thinking of not renewing this year - as i pay £450 a year to cover 4 pigs - I WILL DEFINITELY be renewing this year as am currently up to £1450 worth of bills with more to come after Bumbles bladder op - noodles op - Nuggets emergency admittance etc - exotic are currently quoting £14.50 per month per pig - as in the last few years there has been a huge increase in the number of claims on guineas - you can put up to 3 animals of the same type on 1 policy giving you an overall cover of £2000 per year between them - this might make the premium a bit cheaper - you can pay in instalments over 10 months - Look at it like a mobile phone contract cost wise - you probably pay for one and think its a necessity - you have to pay the first £65 of a any claim - but Bumbles treatment is over £500 so far - Noodles over £500 - I have had 3 of mine admitted as emergencies out of hours in the last 6 days - an out of hours consult before anything else is £103 and my vets are very reasonably priced - you might not claim on it ,and at the end of the year think its a waste of money - but its a real peace of mind - after all - we don't moan when we haven't been in a car accident and happily pay our car insurance because it is a necessity - hope this helps.

its the same with any insurance i guess... you pay it, hope you might never need it but when you do you are happy you had it... Shame its so expensive but when you have had such huge vet bills, it pays for itself ..

AHHH! That's definitely worth doing. Once I have my car sorted out (test on Monday) I will certainly get my little ones insured! It seems like it's a good idea and worth it. Thanks for the massive information guys! Really big help!

I use Exotics Direct as well and they are great, always paid up very quickly and so lovely when you call them and genuinely sad when you let them know one has passed on and you dont need cover any more.

Costs me about £60 per month for 3 but i have made an awful lot of claims over the years. I did add it all up a year or so ago and I think the cost of the insurance v the vet fees was about the same, I was a little better off than the insurance company I think! However, peace of mind is the biggest thing for me and knowing that if I have to get investigative work done I can do it without worrying about the cost. Last year I did decide to only insure my older pigs leaving the two youngest uninsured thinking they would be OK as they were younger. Oh how wrong I was! So now all are covered although I now sadly only have three left now as I am scaling down.
