Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this - but I was just wondering is it a good idea to insure piggies or not? I have set up a savings account where I will put away so much each week for vets fees but I wondered about insurance?

xx

The £4000 that I've had paid out on insurance in the last 12 months makes me glad I insured mine!

That's £3000 on one pig, £700 on another, and £300 on a third.

Who do you have yours insured with if you don't mind me asking? I did try looking online but I couldn't find many places and it all got very confusing, it seemed to be they needed insuring under exotic animals?

I have a dog who has had some bad bouts of illness so having insurance for her was a saviour, which is what got me thinking of it. xx

Exotic direct are the only company that insures guinea pigs as far as I'm aware. That's who I'm insured with. Have never had a problem and they've always paid out promptly without problems.

Also, technically, guinea pigs are classed as exotic animals!

I also use exotic direct, well worth it for me, had about 400 quid from them for vet bills.

Thank you all! After a silly start (accidently put that Sock was ill) I now have two insured guinea pigs with Exotic Direct :) *Touch Wood* I will never have to call on it but should the worst happen at least I know I will have both their fund and insurance to turn to :)

Good stuff, here's hoping you don't have to use it :)

I would say it depends on the amount of piggies you have and the amount you are putting away.

With the numbers of pigs i have (eighteen) i have not insured any of them for the simple fact of the huge price it would cost me to insure every last one. However i make sure i am able to pay for any costs with them. Although i work for where my pigs go and can delay payment a little i still have to pay. I would def advice either insurance with exotics direct or setting up the bank account. Either way. Piggies can be costly if you are willing to treat them, ive spent hundreds and I'm sure into the thousands on mine. (i dont like to look back at the bills lol)

I'm keeping my fingers tightly crossed :).

It's just the two and I don't plan on getting any more as I don't think I would have the space here (though I'm very good at finding space when I need to so I shall never say never) - I feel 'safest' doing both as then I know I'm double protected if one goes wrong hopefully the other will be there to catch me so to speak.

I put £30 a month away and that has been well wiped out this year with Minky alone costing nearly £400. Luckily I've had savings I could draw from.

I dont have insurance on my small animals, I do on my cat and dog. I looked into insurance at one point and to insure 5 piggies, 3 rabbits and 10 hamsters was stupid money. For the small furries I put £50 a month into a bank account specifically for pets, I have a £500 credit card that is there as a "just in case" for the animals and other savings pots I can dip into if required. So far my worst vet bills has been £30 at a time.

I'm really pleased that I found this information. I will definitely look into insuring my 2 healthy guinea pigs. I have so far committed myself to about £300 for my extremely poorly Alex. I don't regret trying to get him better but I cannot always be able to afford this in the future for my other 2 should they become ill.

I looked into insuring mine when they were little but it seemed very expensive, plus lots of things aren't covered on it. The only bills we've had so far in 4.5 years are for Poppy's teeth (around £100) and Dora's current situation - spay operation + meds which will be around £90 because of her complications. The insurance wouldn't have paid out for Poppy's costs as they don't cover dental. So I'm glad I haven't been paying out all this time, I have put a little extra into my savings instead. I guess its worth it if you unfortunately end up with a really poorly piggy but obviously there is no way to predict that and the charges for pigs with pre-existing medical conditions were very very high or they refused to insure them at all.
