Hi;
Just booked my adopted piggies into the Vet for a check up as I don't think they'll have ever been before.
Do any of you have insurance or is that a really DURR question? I always used PetPlan for my bunnies, noticed that Guineas are classed as Exotic :0) Anyone any tips on other providers?
Cheers
Clare

I have mine insured with Exotics Direct. Just put first ever claim through for my Itsy ( mammary tumour plus chin abscess issues) so hoping everything goes smooth! And I am glad I insured them because I didn't have to think about weather I can afford or not afford a good few hundred pounds to have her treated. Peace of mind for me and knowing my fur babies will always be covered :)

Fortunately, my Max was insured (Exotics Direct) as he has just had a hefty vets bill for his abscess.

Exotics Direct is the only company I have found that will insure Guinea Pigs. Pity really, as a bit of competition would help to keep the premiums down.

I personally do not insure my small animals mainly because insuring 2 piggies, 3 rabbits, varying hamsters, 6 rats etc becomes crazy money vs saving. I have only had one large vet bill due to illness of a piggie in the last 4 years and that was £150. In the future maybe I would spend the money but right now a savings pot will suffice. Id never leave an animal in pain but id always be sensible over the costs, sadly I dont have thousands to try every possible treatment out there on a whim it might work for example. I do not qualify for RSPCA or PDSA help.

I use Exotics Direct and they have saved me a fortune. I have been using them for about 7 years now. Always very good and very helpful. I just prefer knowing that I do not need to worry about money to do any tests, investigations and treatment. I would be fine if one was sick but if several were at the same time I would struggle money wise. To me it's a massive peace of mind.

I'm insured with Exotics Direct as I have my oldest piggy with bladder issues that have cost nearly £2000 in total, with all the check ups, operations, antibiotics etc. I decided to get the other 2 insured because of her & am glad I did, as one had an op a year later costing £400 with x-rays etc & now the other one is having tests done so I already have a claim going through of £150. Would definitely recommend insuring & I would with any future piggies too :)

I'm insured with exotic direct - 7 pigs, multiple claims (for very large sums if money!), never had a problem

I had looked at getting gizmo insured before and never done it , now I'm having to pay for dental problems would the insurance even have covered dental as i know the dental is a very grey area with my dog .

I haven't insured my guinea pigs, Sophie cost me almost a thousand pounds last year and it meant I couldn't rent a flat as essentially that was the deposit money. I don't regret it but I wish I could afford insurance for them!

Thanks everyone - fantastic info as always :yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:

Booked in at the vets tomorrow (friday). Will be having a good think about the insurance.

My piggies are insured with my local vet Orchard vets. They have a few other branches so I'd recommend them if you have one nearby! my two pigs are under £10 a month at the moment. They are very good I am glad I insured them as I am a constant worrier :(

I wish my vets did this. I have insurance for my dog. He was ill at the beginning of the year. The vet bill was over £300. I had to borrow the money from my mum. As the vets in this area want go though insurance company. You have to pay vet and claim back from insurance. I'm with a insurance company that will make payments straight to vets. But the vets want do it that way. So its still a worry if you have a big vet bill as vets want wait for insurance.

I will add that Exotics Direct sent me a cheque last time before I even paid the vet as the vet put in a direct claim to them for me, so I didn't have to pay anything up front :)

Registered with Exotic Direct, didn't take out a quote... Just received 10% code.. Glad i wasn't hasty! Will check with the vets tomorrow before I do anything x Thanks x
