Hi everyone!

Could someone recommend a good insurance company in the UK for guinea pig insurance please?

Thanks you :)

Do you need to insure your Guinea pig? I thought it was only for "big" animals like cats and dogs.

I don't think you HAVE to but I am just in case; they are considered exotic animals so of anything does happen, better to be safe than sorry!

No, you don't NEED to insure your guinea pigs - but we do recommend members make provision for vets bills - some members have a separate savings account . Mine are insured as it gives me peace of mind .

What sort of things do you have to pay for and what are the prices usually like?

Also how much is insurance roughly?

Vet bills mainly I think, but I don't know costs.

I got a quote of £29 per month for 10 months from Exotic Direct for 2 piggies.

I'm sure there are more experienced owners who can advise; I've only had my boars for 3 weeks!

I think I might leave it for now

I used to have four guinea pigs so I just couldn't afford the monthly premium to insure them. I now have 3 guinea pigs.

Although they are uninsured, I do however have a separate savings account for vets bills and a little extra should I ever have a huge vet bill

Hopefully I won't need to take mine to the vets.
I spoke to a friend who lives near by and has loooed after Guinea pigs for years about what bet she uses and insurance etc and she said she's never taken her to the vets - fingers crossed mine will be just as lucky

I insure both of mine, it is well worth it imo :) My last pig that died Petal, wasn't insured & in total her vet bills over her lifetime were about £4,000 due to ops, x rays, scans & meds.

Wow that is quite a surprise, although some people do refuse to take their animals to the vets even when they are very poorly & some don't notice when they are ill until it is too late :( Either way I won't let my piggies suffer so I am prepared to pay out at the vets for them. Hoping you never need a vet might not be enough, so a savings plan if not insurance is always a good idea.

Oh my, sorry to hear that.
What sort of stuff did she end up having done?

She had bladder sludge & ended up having a bladder flush, hysterectomy & various other things. She had chronic urine infections for several years, so antibiotics, pain relief monthly injections etc it all added up. I wasn't prepared to have her pts just because she was a small pet, so I just kept taking her for treatment as her quality of life was good. I didn't ever think it would happen to me either, but it can :(
