Hi everyone :)

I got home from work today to find a miserable piggy huddled in the corner of hutch with a long strand of hay sticking out of her eye. It was mostly stuck under her upper eyelid and I managed to gently tease it out.

Eye is unfortunately clouded over, blue, and a large red lump has formed under the upper lid. I phoned the emergency vet who say that it doesn't sound like it's life or death and can likely wait until morning. The trouble is I can't get her to vet until tomorrow afternoon! (We are quite remote here).

Does anyone know what I could be doing in the meantime to soothe it a little? Does flushing with cooled boiled water help much? Eye is open and pig is eating, she's not massively well handled (though she is tame enough) so I don't want to wind her up trying to poke and prod unnecessarily

Any advice appreciated! Again vet has been spoken to.

well, I know what I'd do - ring around and get an appointment somewhere else - tonight . It may not be life and death - but hay pokes should be dealt with promptly for 2 reasons - firstly , to minimise any long term damage to the eye and secondly to start some pain relief.

are you in the UK?

I am in the UK - yorkshire based and very rural so there are 2 vets nearby, one really isn't good for small animals and this one I phoned who says leave it until the morning. I swear they know what time of day they can safely injure themselves without an imminent vets visit!

I’d really try to get the eye seen to tonight by any emergency vet you can get to see.
The longer you leave it the worse the damage, the greater the size of the ulcer, the greater the chance of a significant infection. It’s really an emergency and very painful for the piggy.

Thanks both of you for your advice and sorry I haven't updated sooner. Piggy has seen vet now, she's got a corneal ulcer so has 2 types of eye drops for a week and then back for a check up. Prognosis for eye is good ulcer doesn't look too deep, and piggy is in good spirits
