Hello,

I am after a bit of advice, we have had Woody our male guinea pig for a year now, we rescued him and think he is probably about 2 years old now. He gets lots of human company, however i am thinking that maybe a guinea pig friend may be beneficial for him.

I have been told by a guinea pig rescue place that i shouldnt get another male as they are likely to fight, so i am going to get Woody neutured and get 2 females instead. Is this correct or would getting another male work?

Should i get an older guinea pig(s) or would babies be better?

I have already purchased a new larger guinea pig cage so when we the new guinea pig(s) are introduced it will be in a neutral place.

Any advice would be welcome.

hi getting 2 male babies is a bad idea woody might hurt the babies

u should probably get a female and neuture woody

Hi, I'm not sure what rescue you approached but the information is not strictly correct unless they know something about woody we don't :)) there is absolutely no reason why he wouldn't get on with another male and the best way to take this on is to go boar dating at a reputable rescue and allow him to choose his own friend. That way there is going to be a stronger bond.

Neutering carries a risk as does any operation involving anaesthetic in such a small creature. This risk increases with age but can be minimised by having a cavy savvy vet who is experienced in the operation. He would then need to wait 6 weeks to be introduced to any females as he could still be firing live ones up to that point. Babies or older sows could work but again depends on the dominant sow being willing to accept him (only usually becomes a problem in older sows). The babies won't be hurt by him as they will be too quick for him, I've not long introduced a baby sow into my group of fully grown piggies and my neutered male was 1200g at that point compared to her 300g. He tried to rumble and impress her but babies are nimble and he could never catch her

If it was me I’d take him boar dating and get a male friend for him rather than risk an anaesthetic. I have two males and they get on really well - the odd bit of occasional bickering but nothing more than you expect.
