Introducing a new piggie to bonded pair

Hi all,

Haven't been on here for what seems like ages, have been in blissful piggie heaven with my two gorgeous wheekies! They have changed so much since we had them, much more outgoing and a lot more squeakie (I'm pleased to say!). Anyway, I digress..

I have been thinking for a while that I wanted to add one more piggie to our family. It worries me if one of them passes on that the other will be left alone, I could bear to see the other pine away.

I have a bonded female and neutered male. I was hoping to add another sow to the pair. Any tips on how to do this? Can you introduce an new adult sow to an established pair? Or is this likely to cause problems? As we only want a rescue piggie, from what i can tell browsing the forum here and various rescue centres i know of it is quite hard to find a lone baby sow...

Any advice?!

Hello! Glad to hear your pigs are doing well.

It depends on their temperaments really - some older less dominant sows will just settle right in, if yours will let her - others will have cross words! If there is a rescue near you, they could try and match a sow with your existing two and help you with the introductions. Should be fine though - just a case of finding the right sow! Baby sows do come up in rescue, so that might be a possibility too!

My sow is quite shy really. I would worry about getting another sow that is really dominant and that would bully her. Good tip about the introductions! I know the rescue where we got those two from do introductions, but they're closing over the summer for refurbishment so will have to explore other rescues...

I have a sow who is very dominant (Bonnie) and introduced a very submissive sow (Lucy) to her, was a bit concerned she might be bullied. However now they are the absolute best of friends and spend a great deal of time grooming one another.
 
i would just let them meet on neautral ground and they should be fine. You can only give it a go and see if it works. If it doesn't though you need to be prepared for having to bond the sow with another piggy. You just need to make sure you have the room for this. They should be fine though. x
