I just got a dog yesterday! xx>>> :<>:(|)It's a Cairn Terrier. I was wondering how I should introduce my pig to Buddy my dog. I took Sophie out and they sniffed each others noses. Is there anything else I need to do? ~Thank You~

In my opinion, the best thing is not to introduce them at all, especially at the moment. Until you know the temperament of your new dog I would keep them apart!

A small squeaky animal that can dart quickly is the ideal toy for a dog.. we keep ours separate, you just never know what might happen next :...

muzzle the dog have it on a leash and allow them to meet through the bars, pull the dog away as soon as either gets stressed. We made the mistake of not supervising our staffie with the pigs, he had to be rescued after they decided he was no longer welcome

I introduced my dog to my calmest piggie, the dog peed herself and started shaking and foaming at the mouth in fear (the dog is fine when she is really scared she does that) ... so yeah my terrier is scared of guinea pigs :/

Thanks!

Sorry I havn't responded. My computer is so slow! 8:)8:)
I put Buddy on a leash (I dont have a muzzle) and let him sniff Sophie through the cage bars. Sophie was laying down and never looked up. Buddy looked at me then Sophie and walked away.
:)p
Thank You For All The Info! <3

also, just a teeny tiny heads up.. Terriers in all shapes LOVE rodents. They were bred for hunting them in particular. The smell might be too irresistable for their instincts. Better safe than sorry! -c

I echo what dusty has said you shouldn't trust a terrier with a piggy. Please be careful as its there natural prey instinct

I would never trust any kind of dog with small furries 100%. We never truly know our dogs and what will trigger a bad reaction. My dog is very laid back with the furries around but I would never let her get too close. My two piggy boys live in the lounge which is also where the dog and cat live, but they are up on a table and in a secure 120cm cage and fortunately, Kizzie (dog) shows no interest. :)

Edited to add: That didn't really answer the original question, so my answer would be that I would not introduce them face to face for quite a while- if ever. I would let the dog get used to their smell through the cage bars gradually and always supervised. Hopefully if she's an older dog, she will settle down and accept them calmly.

Somebody needs to tell my terrier to grow a pair, shes so scared so wont go near the guineas, I wouldnt use a c&c even with a lid anywhere in the house though with her because one day she might grow a pair. My gerbils however to catch her attention but they're in a glass tank and not bothered by her watching them.

Hutches arent always ideal as the dog managed to put his head thru it. the pigs living in a 4 at the time chattered and bit him. he's not been near them since and backs away if they come over
