So as most you of know I have a new companion for GusGus as sadly my Jasper passed away. My new boy is 12 weeks old and GusGus is 1year old. I have a 2x5 C&C cage which I have divided in half with grids so they can see and smell each other. They have been like this since Monday and have been wheeking at each other and sniffing through the grids. How long shall I leave it like this and what would be the preferred next step? I really want my boys to get on so will take as much time needed. I will attach a few pics :Dimage.webpimage.webp

If there's no aggression and they seem to want to be with each other, as it sounds like they do, I would put them both on neutral ground :)
Squiggly is a lovely little guy :)

So I've put my boys together in a neutral play pen with two tunnels and some hay. They are just snuggled with each other under one of the tunnels. so far there has been no rumble strutting or any signs of aggression just some wheeking and following around which I'm guessing is a good sign? They seem happy together at the moment so I'm going to take the divider out of their cage into a big one again. Should I keep out the hideys or will it be ok to keep them in? image.webpimage.webp

Sounds pretty good to me.... I'd leave hideys in as long as they have more than one entrance so no-one can corner each other. Make sure there's two food bowls and bottles too so they don't have to share if they don't want but so far so good....

If you are putting them back in the cage with no divider then make sure you clean it all out so it's relatively neutral too. That way they can start off afresh. Keep a close eye on them and just make sure there is no signs of aggression. A bit of rumbling and chasing is normal though.

Sounds like you've got a good match but just keep an eye on things as your new boy gets older and hits his hormonal patch as GusGus probably isn't fully out of his teenage phase at 1 year old (it can last til 18 months...) but they seem fairly chilled so paws crossed they'll be fine :)

There's been a lot of chasing and a bit of mounting from GusGus so hopefully things will go smoothly. Very exciting!

He'll just be wanting to make sure this young upstart knows his place ;) The problems come later when Shawn is bigger and decides he wants to be in charge....
