I called in to the local pet shop on Friday and as I usually do I popped in to the animal section for a quick look and the place was full of rabbits, I wandered along the pens and there were some good looking rabbits. Pen number 4 had 2 signs on it - 1 for female rabbits and the other for male guinea pigs, there was only 1 guinea pig in the pen and he was terrified so went to the rabbits for comfort. They got up kicked him in the head on the way past and I went to the sales assistant to get him out of there.

He is a coronet boar and is only 10 weeks old and is now living with us in the safety of our shed.

I thought it bad enough that rabbits and guinea pigs are shoved in pens together at pet shops but these were 3 HUGE female rabbits. He'd been there for 2 weeks too.

I brought him home, my husband was a bit confused but then fell in love with him, he named him Waylon Jones to go with the batman theme running through our names now we've filled the alphabet.

Welcome to the family Waylon

Aw thats so horrible for the little guy!

Glad you have saved him, he sounds like he needs lots of cuddles and reassurance:)

Good work!

x

That's terrible, poor little Waylon thank goodness you saved him.
Please report this pet shop, they shouldn't have rabbits and guinea pigs together for that exact reason.

Am so glad you took him in, poor boy. Looking forward to pics :)

Aww the poor little guy. Least you have saved him from possibly being kiled :O stupid pet shops

He's a lovely little guy, very, very timid. Need to give him a few days to settle in, he's eating ok and drinking so he just needs time.

I spoke to a local rescue the other week and she said there's no longer a legislation for pet shops to keep guinea pigs and rabbits apart, before they were able to remove the pigs from the rabbit pens and report the pet shops but now there's nothing to stop it. There's \t least 2 pet shops near me that have them mixed.

I think I've attached a picture if it works

Oh my goodness he is sooooo handsome! I want a snuggle with him xoxo Well done for saving him from the stupid pet shop!
I'm glad the petshop near here keeps their bunnies and piggies apart or I'd come home with all their piggies :))

He is gorgeous, a very small 10 week old he only weighs 400g, my 5 week old babies weigh that so he's obviously had to fight for his food. He is a very fussy eater and so far will only eat carrots, cucumber, celery and spring greens. He loves the burgess excel guinea pig food as I can imagine the diet at the pet shop will have been rabbit food.

He'll get there eventually, he'll be a challenge which I'm used to having so many rescue pigs.

Oh my...he is stunning! I'm in love x)
The pet shop near me keeps buns and guins together too :( Fortunately, they are only young buns, but it's still not on. Poor piggies. I want to save them all :0

Awww my isnt he handsome? I'm so glad you took him from that awful pet shop :( he has a better life now :))

Aww I saw the same thing in a pet shop in liverpool. Its not a nice pet shop and there was a tiny piggy in a small cage with a big rabbit and just one bowl of food. I was tempted to buy him but felt it only encourage's the shop to carry on doing this. What can you do? Well done tho for getting him out xx>>>

As soon as I saw him on his own, I knew he was coming home with me. Luckily my husband knows what I'm like and doesn't mind additions to the family, I did it to him once before when we got Ulric, all I did was go out shopping while he was at work and came home with a new guinea pig I'd seen the day before. He was mad at me initially until he saw him and then loved him, he got to name him to say sorry.
We've still got 2 cages free in our shed for special circumstances and we've normally always got room for rescuing them.

A quick update on Waylon.

We've had Waylon 4 weeks now and he's made some good improvements, he's still a timid little boy and slightly underweight (weighs less than 8 week old baby of ours) but he eats well and is gaining weight with us.

He came out for an hour or so the other day while I was off work poorly and we sat on the sofa cuddling and I trimmed his long hair back a little and he started chittering away to me which I know is a sign he is comfortable and feels safe.

This morning was the best when I went out to feed the gang, he was stood at the front of his hutch wheeking away for his breakfast. I'm so proud of him.

We are hoping to pair him up with another boar soon so he won't feel as lonely, he's very happy now and has found he can pull the newspaper lining up and hide under it.

Aaww, that's great! How sweet x) He's such a little cutie, I'm glad he's settling in well and gaining weight :).
