Iris Bled A Little

Yesterday Iris went into heat for the first time. This morning she was acting perfectly normal except she was spotting a little bit. Of course, she has to pull this on a Sunday when I can't call the vet. Unfortunately I had work today but I've come home and not noticed anymore blood (I use fleece blankets for bedding so it would've been easy to find). I flipped her over to look at her lady bits and there's no blood like when I turned her over this morning when I saw some blood on the towel.

Could she have some bladder or stone issues? I can't believe I lost Scuzzy to a UTI just to have one of my new pigs bleeding now.

She may have a urine infection. Please do not panic just yet as this can easily be treated with a course of antibiotics. Hopefully you can get an appointment tomorrow.

Sows can sometimes spot a little bit when in season. It is usually a one-off mystery experience for their owners.

However, if you see more signs of bleeding etc. please have her seen by a vet. If you suspect stones or sludge, make sure that she has an x-ray to exclude that possibility early on. The best antibiotic to treat UTIs and bladder is bactrim for the US and septrin for the UK. Uterine problems are usually much rarer than bladder problems, but they need to be considered, too.

I am very sorry; it is always worse when you have lost a piggy to a particular problem before.

Just thought I'd pop back in and say Iris is just fine. After that teeny bit she didn't bleed anymore and the vet did what he needed to rule out anything else.

I found a tad bit of blood next to my little sow's urine a month ago and almost had a heart attack, nothing since and I check ALL the time. It may be what Wiebke said, I am assuming that is what happened with my girl.
