hey, about a week ago i noticed piggy had some bloody looking pee for two nights running. so i took her to the vets last monday, she was checked and everything seemed fine - insides felt normal, she had some 48hr lasting antibiotic Marbocyl SA just incase it was the beginning of cystitis. i asked if i would need to give her probiotics and was told no, Marbocyl was licenced for small animals and fine for g.pigs and rabbits.

but since last tuesday ive noticed that her faeces is rather odd, they are a very irregular shape, very dark brown and very squishy. they also look like they are covered in a mucos layer, and produced through out the day. she also wasnt too fussed on eating her carrot yesterday which is very odd as she will do anything for carrots!

i know corralation doesnt necessarily mean causation, and might be wrong in linking the two together, but anyone have any idea why her faeces has changed?

thanks

No other dietary changes? Is she eating her hay as normal? Does she drink well? Mucous on the faeces can indicate dehydration, I believe.

Antibiotics given by injection tend to cause a less harsh reaction in the gut, but it's not impossible for her to have reacted to the Marbocyl. One of my past sows, Lottie, was treated with Marbocyl for repeated cystitis; they worked well in tablet form and she never had any reaction to it. Even medications that are licensed for particular species can cause an adverse reaction in any individual.

just looked in at pig and theres blood all over the cage, coating her faeces. its also coming out of her anus.
ringing vet asap

i hope the saying 'start the year as you mean to go on' dosent apply here

Oh dear - best get her to the vets asap!

It could well be an infection of the guts.

Sending my vibes! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Something doesn't sound right, I hope the vets can get to the bottom of it. (No pun intended...)

Best of luck.
xx

i dont know, its fresh undigested blood, which seems to suggest something to do with the very end of the digestive tract. what ever it is, it has stopped now, it was only when she pooped. theres no more blood in the cage which suggests it hasnt happened before.

Keeping my fingers crossed for the wee mite and sending supportive vibes your way hun.

fingers crossed for you hope all goes well sending good vibes your way xx

CONSTIPATION! blood everywhere becasue she was straining!
have 5 days of probiotics to put in her water. might have been something to do with the anitbiotics on monday, but 48hr lasting ones dont normally cause any problems.
have decided she is an abnormal pig.
and now i can finish off cooking and eating my lunch!

Plenty of veggies needed too I guess.

So pleased that it's not something more serious although it does sound nasty.

Poor thing

I'm so glad you found out what it was and sounds like you are on your way to sorting it out.

i too am glad. dont think ive ever panicked so much in my life! i was rushing around carying pig, phoning tonnes of people! dont think she had a clue what was going on!
she did NOT appretiate her temp. being taken or palpitation of her abdomen tho! tried to bite me and the vet so many times and kicking everywhere. right temper tantrem she threw! it is now offically on her vet records to be careful as she bites!
